Advice please,

Just got a 1968 404, it came with a spare car , both have the same issue, the temp gauge even when ignition off , the needle points to just at the edge of blue (about one third across, heading into the "normal" zone)
It seems to still work when car is warm, it even got to up to the red section, the car didn't seem to be running hot though.
I doubt it is the sender since the gauge is like this even with car off.

Is this just how they go?
Can I fix it, e.g. remove gauge, reset where needle points.
Put on another temp gauge and test it for accuracy?

Mine also a bit eccentric - it boils when gauge is just into the upper zone

New senders available from France, as are gauge innards and I may have a spare sender, but it is likely to be due to 50yo gauge

In my case I have just used infrared thermometer to tell me what it means when gauge is high, I now live with it.

The critical bit of information is what point on the gauge indicates impending destruction

Do you have access to one of those infrared thermometer guns? They are quite cheap and have 101 handy uses around the home

Best Wishes

Andrew
