Hi all
I have a 308 T9 2.0 turbo diesel that I’m tossing up whether to fix or sell for scrap (or to someone who knows how to fix it.)

Unfortunately a year or two ago, overheating issues were misdiagnosed and as a result, it appears the heads are stuffed (ie exhaust getting in to coolant) I got it patched up as best the mechanic could (after spending $3k on thermostat housing and a replacement ‘GSR’(?))and was told to trade it ASAP or just use for small trips only.

I just used it to go to the shops and back but On its last trip out before it died, it made a horrible engine noise and stopped dead. Won’t restart. Mobile mechanic came out and said the ‘crank sensor’ had failed (according to the computer scan) but didn’t think it would cause the engine noise I described.

Basically I’m wondering whether to spend the bucks to get a secondhand engine put in (have seen the engine itself on eBay for $4k) but not sure how much a mechanic would charge to fix, but then could possibly sell for $10-$12k or sell it as is to the highest bidder and cut my losses (best bid was $4k)

It was a lovely car but I’m no mechanic (you may have guessed that by now) - any advice would be welcome.

Too good of a car to scrap. If it was mine, i'd find a good specialist and get it sorted.

Questions running through my head... T9 308, so 2015 ish? Dealer warranty for 5 years? Who did the servicing and who misdiagnosed the issue leading to this failure?

Aside from that, if the car is known from new, no accident history etc then I would be fixing. Used cars are at an all time high at the moment. For eg. A 2017 VW golf tsi will sell for close to new RRP with 50,000 Kay's today. Nuts. Point being, what else would you get for your money?

Flood damaged Peugeot will be very cheap buy one with low kms, get the engine tested if engine water/dirt didn't get inside. If it did take it to an engine rebuilder to strip and reassemble.

Rebuilding your current engine will not be worthwhile due to the alloy head being previously overheated and therefore only worth scrap.

Others in SA should be able to provide local contacts

This is presumably a BlueHDi engine with AHX in the VIN? Assuming it is, the thermostat is an electrically controlled valve and was probably replaced because it was leaking or it had jammed. If it hasn't been near a dealer for a few years, there is likely a software update, which improves the way this is managed. This engine also has an Exhaust Gas Rercirculation (EGR) valve assembly that incorporates a cooler, so that is one possible way exhaust gas could find its way into the coolant, although I'd expect it more likely the coolant will leak into the exhaust here. Possibly what you meant by 'GSR'. It sometimes fails on that engine.

No idea about the noise, but a bad cam sensor will stop if running. If the head gasket had failed to the point combustion gases are going into the cooling system, then it's also possible that coolant could flow into a cylinder and cause a hydraulic lockup. Without proper diagnosis, everyone is just guessing.

If you needed a used engine, you could try VolksTorque in Adelaide with contact info here per the link below. They may be able to suggest a mechanic who is able to properly diagnose the faults.

Thanks all for your responses and has probably reaffirmed that I need to spend a few more dollars on it to try and get it working.
@David S - yes ESR was what I meant. Firstly the thermostat housing was replaced and then the ESR blew, and that wasn’t cheap.
I’ll see if someone can come out to replace the crank sensor to get it moving again 🤞and go from there.
Any suggestions for an SA Pug mechanic. I won’t go back to the dealer again, and have tried Aust Studio and Dodsons.
Lion Mechanical was a recommendation?

Hi. What is an ESR? As David S mentioned did you mistype? and intended to say EGR?

Hi all - an update as I finally have taken it somewhere to get it looked at.
Stuart at Charles St Auto has discovered the camshaft belt has slipped and is currently determining whether the engine is shot or not. The belt's teeth had apparently worn down significantly which is surprising given it was only replaced about 4 years ago but maybe just something else that went bad with this one.
Fingers crossed. Looking around it looks as though a replacement engine is about $4k labour + engine + parts...
