I know there has been a bit of talk on the main differences between the s16 and the gti6.

Just seen a nice lookin gti6 for 25k with 82000k its a 98 model.

can any you guys tell me what are some common faults and problems on the gti6 as for i am considering a upgrade.

Any help will be great

Gti-6's ROCK!, all cars need attetion and service, with a gti-6 look after it and it will serve you damm well.
Really though, i think the following probs are petty at worst.
A few members here have mentioned that the gti-6 exhaust/baffles can work loose, rattle and be a right pain. This has come from a few drivers.
Here on AF, ive also heard of the Battery being killed, mainly due to heat in the engine bay, but this also happens to S16's.
Uneven pad wear is common and the disks are easy to score/damage too, but this seem sorta common across the 306 range. Mind you pugs also get driven in very spirited manners sometimes, which would happen to most regular cars if driven so.
A few service centers mention that Coils go to, owning a S16 you would know of this too. Also Clutch cable problems, with the feel of it and action, being a regular complaint.
Perhaps also engine mounts, drive shafts when driven like a daft thief, and serpentine belts, don't forget about the timing-belt too, every 80,000 just like all 306's to be on the safe side.
Paint quality isn't the greatest, and 306's seem to scratch real easy.
Having said all that, the actual engine is pretty well much bullet proof, and a standard and serviced car will serve you well, stockVsstock, i think the GTi-6 is King in the entire Pug hatch range. - chris

ps, this is a logical upgrade, but if money stretches consider a Clio Sport too. Its not a pug but im sure you wont hold that against it :p

Thanks for the pointers chris, what i do like about the car is that its white, so much easier to gide scrathes, compared to my black s16.

I know the feeling...lol. I have a count of eachand every scar on my black S16.
gti-6's look best in Silver and burgundy, but white is nice and deep dish wheels look super fat on a white 306,.... better stop there, rice mods are best left out. - chris

well if i to get it prob just ask teh dealer if we could swap rims since i jus got a det of 16 inch 5 spoke Mak Rims, no chrome n crap just a nice straight alloy finish.

80,000kms service is a MAJOR service including cambelt. The cambelt thing is CRITICAL . Make sure it was done.

306 paint: scratches easily as Chris mentioned. Nice buff with a polish makes the car shine like no other though. And I would have to disagree with Chris, Black is one of the nicer colours for GTi6. But white is rare in GTI6's and looks very smart with nice tint.

306 tint: can and will peel off the rear quarter windows near the factory shading.

306 brakes: Can quite easily "warp".... this may be due to spirited driving culminating on stop at the lights which leaves the brake pad resins on the rotor. Make sure you dont engage brakes (incl handbrake) after spirited run. Rotors and pads arent that expensive though, front rotors from DBA will cost about $130ea, pads French Bendix are about $70. Expect dusty wheels.

306 gearbox: Notchy clutch cable is a common fault. I was lucky with mine, but it was still noticable to new drivers. 2nd gear can be notchy to engage when the gearbox is cold.

306 exhaust: Baffles as mentioned by chris can be a pain... even with newish exhaust. Mine broke last weekend  and are rattling happily at idle. No loss of performance noticed.

306 wheels: it seems that is it mission impossible to get them balanced. reported by few members. You need to goto specialist tyre places and pay a premium to have them balanced. And hope for a good job. It only becomes apparent at about 100-130 kms/hr (varies).

interior noises are common, they come and go. Its a french thing. sound system is below par for such a high priced car, but you will switch it off or down when driving anyhow, the ride is awesome, and it is close to the best handling car I have ever driven. I love my pug ! blush

cheers

Thanks for the advice guys, just waiting to get the s16 back on the road hopefully end of the week, and shall take it from there.

Hope i get a good price for my car

had tint on my windows since the car was about 6 months old
the tint hasn't looked like peeling from the rear windows
it all comes down to who you get to do it
i know that because of the metal edges on the glass the tint won't stick to well to it but the bloke that did mine said there is a way to do it so it doesn't peel and if it does he will rectify it no matter how far down the track it was
5 years later and it is still sticking like the proverbial ... to a blanket

immy,

I had mine on the market and since fixing the brakes, bad earth and new tyres I have fallen in love again blush

They are truely a drivers car.

On tinting haven't had a problem with mine *touch wood* I also have white and although prefer the blue the white is more practical with scratches and the like.

The wheels well I don't want to start :D

If you can afford a Gti6 buy one!!!!

If I had the money I'd buy one no question!!

Just like to know is the gti6 and s16 wheel offsets the same.

Gti6 may be comming very soon

Any 15-18mm offset 4x108 wheels should fit, as long as you have OEM brakes... - chris

ps, Check with a good shop first though.

heya,

check this site out
http://www.tyresave.co.uk/fitment.html#PEUG

remember to ask about the centre bore diameter when buying new wheels. Stud length is kinda important too. Both those things even though often overlooked will help to prevent your wheels shearing the sutds off when pushing your Pug. :)

No why i am asking is that i have alloys wheels on my s16 and if i do get a gti6 i would like to put those alloys on, since i just got the alloys about 2 months ago.

So jus wanted to see if they will fit
