2009 C5 multifunction display

Good result Rob. It's worth repeating the point that the new part is supplied by the factory either to be configured by the dealer or as a configured part, requiring the VIN to be supplied. I don't know if that's VIN-coded somehow or just configured to the characteristics recorded for the VIN (options, engine tppe etc.), so taking a random unit from a wreck may or may not work as a simple plug in swap.
We sourced a new part from local Vic. supplier for Pug 407 and C5 (same item) for less than $150. Took 30 mins to change over in both cases. Postage minimal.

Hi Ceenine. Looks like we both came out well. My main reason for finally going for the OEM MFD was that I was informed by the dealer in Australia that there were two part numbers for the MFD, and that one of those "superseded" the part in my car, which was no longer available. I discussed this with the specialist in Holland who was not of the same view, and although he had the two MFDs with different part numbers in stock, (I had the part numbers of both), I decided it was safer to go with the one that was linked to the VIN number of my car, and matched the original MFD part number in my car. As it turns out, the difference in price between the part you bought and the OEM MFD from Holland was only around $30.

My MFD went blank. I was in a panic about the possible consequences for my bank balance, but I calmed down, Googled the problem, it took me straight to this forum thread. I bought some aerosol, a moulding tool, some torx drivers, followed your instructions and it worked perfectly! I spent more time trying to reset the date and time than to fix the problem.
Many, many thanks.

I thought I had researched the replacement of my blank LCD in my 2008 C5 Tourer thoroughly before deciding a non OEM LCD from aa auto parts on eBay. The seller has sold a heap of these units for Peugeots and Citroens with no come backs of late and advertises his units will not fade. It was advertised as suitable for RD4 and RD45 radios yet when I installed it I am unable to get the date and time function, though everything else seems to work. The seller now asks whether I have an RD4 or RD45 radio but nowhere in the owner manuals does it mention which type of radio is installed. To complicate matters further the service booklets I have show a black radio and facia whereas the radio in my vehicle is silver. Could this possibly have something to do with the change over around Nov 2008 from Series 2 to Series 3 including a change to an RD45 radio? If anyone else has experienced these issues or can offer advice I would appreciate their input. Many thanks

I have been through the mill a bit with my MultiFunction Display but I have ended up with a good result. I hadn't been able to use the original display on hot days for years, and lately, even the internally generated heat will wash out the display so it is unreadable. I do have a Dension Gatewaypro BT attached in the lead to my car radio for playing music from a USB stick and providing the Bluetooth mobile phone music streaming and call functions. I have learned that the Dension unit reconfigures and adds functionality to the multifunction display and interprets button functions from the radio to allow a quite sophisticated music selection and mobile phone control function.

First of all I bought a Chinese made copy of the MFD called a EMF-C that was recommended on another thread here. It performed all the normal MFD functions well and was bright but would not support any of the Gateway functions even after a Dension diagnostic session. I have this unit for sale on the Parts Forum if someone just needs a standard MFD for their C5X7.

I decided I needed a OEM Display and found a reasonably priced unit from the UK that had the same hardware version as mine V1503, but the software version was one version less at V51.5 than my display which was V51.6. I thought that I could probably get the software upgraded and decided to take a punt on this display. It was functionally better than Chinese Display but would not show the reversing sensor display and even after Dension reconfiguring, would not allow answering of an incoming call. Also, the brains of the display was a 100 pin flat pack chip surface mounted to the board and labelled with the software version. It appeared not to be able to be upgraded in situ. The only option would have been to swap the chip from my dislpay to the new display. I did try to remove the flat pack CPU chip with my hot air blower twice but chickened out after putting in a lot of heat but not being able to melt enough of the solder on pins to remove the chip.

I went back to the internet to look for other solutions that would allow me to use my original module. I remembered seeing some chinese sellers offering a replacement screen. What I found was an Italian Company called Minitools.com who specialised in manufacturing replacement LCD screens for European car instrument panels and they had a screen for the Citroen MFD with a supporting video showing how the display could easily be repaired to use their hydrid display board and new screen. The price and shipping cost for DHL Express were reasonable so I ordered one and it came in 4 days. Installation was straight forward. I did have to use the solderwick to remove some joints where solder had joined to the next joint but after careful inspection and reassembly, it worked first time. I think anyone could use a fine soldering iron to do this upgrade providing you had some very fine solder wire.

So now I have a fully functional display with new screen and as a bonus, the polarising on the new screen was turned by 90 degrees so you can actually see it when you are wearing your sunglasses. I have put a link to the installation video below:

Cheers, Ken
