Hello,
I have a 2001 Renault scenic RX4, 5 speed manual JC7 gearbox.
It has started making whirring sounds at startup in gear. No sound when started in neutral. Have also discovered it has lost oil (but not where I usually park it). The underside tray is covered in oil. Are there any mechanics recommended near Richmond Victoria.

Universe Motors are French specialists - just over the river in Church St Hawthorn. I've not used them but they have a good reputation.
If you are willing to travel a little bit further - Cars of France in Darebin Road Alphington are, in my experience, excellent. But they are busy and booked up so you will have to wait a bit to get in.

Ian.

Where are RX4 owners getting their boot covers for drive shaft (transmission side) for LHS of manual gearbox.
The renault part number is 7701464129 for scenic RX4 2001 model.
The complete kit looks like this,

Careful, the bearing is in 2 sizes.

Febest ebay does the boot in Australia.
Other bearing from poland or Latvia.
Or use the old bearing.

I would be avoiding using the old bearing/seal, but I could be wrong? (shrug)

there are a few RX4 gotchas that could be pinned.
namely coils, the gearbox / driveshaft seal and broken prop shaft.

Besides these weak spots they are real troopers (I think) representative of the legendary 16.
Having entirely wrecked one now I was impressed at how well built they are.
The attention to detail is astounding. From the fancy locking clamps on the harness down to the padding material under trim and dash.. moulded polystyrene rattle deadening around the ignition.

Only things I besides these I could fault:
a) a little bit underpowered,
b) 1st gear isnt very low

old lady woes.. aging...

c) roof trim fabric falls off over time
d) windows start falling down
e) panels fade at different rates.

Is it true only 500 RX4s were sold in Australia?
If so they come to southern Tasmania to die.

I met a bloke at work who used to have one in Hobart - I wonder what the chances are that you have it now :)

If its not green or blue then I don't have it.

Otherwise, its even more likely :)
I think I mentioned I was offered another the other day at the bottleshop drive-in... "with a dead butterfly". Coils I recon.

unlike most other cars the drive shaft rotates in the boot ,the seal is in the boot ,not the gearbox so failure of the boot or the boot seal means the gearbox oil will leak out ,take note of pic in vantones post

I'll ask him :)

Maybe I'll have to liberate one from you one day and fix it up. It was the first ever car I test drove brand new - was on my way home from a job interview so was wearing a suit, so thought id see if theyd let a 20 something idiot like me drive one.

In hindsight, I should have tried for the brand new 1 of 85 Clio Sports they had...

yea I started with a couple from melbourne and both ended up too good to wreck. since I ended up with a few very cheap ones with either dead power unit (burned valves) and good gearbox, or vice versa.
They really are underrated cars, but why you didn't test drive a new Clio RS, you must have hit your head.

Side crash worthiness is remarkable .
Just ask my wife who was hit in the side by a removal van in Nimmitabel main street.
My daughter has that car now and won't give it back.
Two bloody kids, took the middle seat out and it fits everything in.

Had a really shitt day, rain wont, stop doing my wife's P206 1.4 , head gaket to the book with angle torque and i break a stud off in the the block, nor, ally i just do them to 65 never had a problem. so looking at putting another engine in, if i chant get the stud out.
I do these normally by feel but followed the gasket insructions.
Part of me feels stupid.

20nm then 240' in steps and i am thinking this is too much.
Bolt breakes then then rain sets in , i go inside to get a vodka.
I cant be the only person been screwed.

Here is my 2001 Scenic RX4 Privilege with 340,000km, still running perfectly and in great condition. I had a similar issue back in 2021. Gearbox leaked from the driveshaft boot, luckily I caught it before driving. Got the whole driveshaft complete with boot for $150 on a website called Spareto.com, cheaper than replacing just the boot. Altogether the repair with part was $500. How many kms does yours have?

Fewer than 500, I spoke with Renault a couple of years ago and apparently they only sold 418 in total.
