David Reynolds was handed a 25k fine by V8 Supercar management for a comment made during a press conference yesterday.

The comment referred to the car driven by the all female pairing of Simona de Silvestro and Renee Gracie which he referred to as the 'pu$$y wagon'...

They are all effectively team mates in the prodrive garage.

He released a statement a few minutes later appologising for his comment.

Is 25k a reasonable fine? I thought it was a bit OTT.

It not really about the act, more as a statement towards acseptence of female involvement in the sport, bit rough for Reynolds but I think it sends a good message.

Is this the same sport where we see scantily clad women on the pit lane?

What a joke this action is.

They might need to look in the mirror.

Codman, how does the above image fit the 'message'???

"pussy wagon" is verbally crude, and overall sounds derogatory.
the presence of attractive women lacks both of those elements.

anyone in front of a camera should realise that doing the 'right thing' eg not coming across as insulting women, is critically important in the 21st century. furthermore, if outfits like V8 Supercar management dont respond with something non trivial, then they get criticised too. so whatever one thinks about the expression personally, seems to me that the response is entirely appropriate and necessary, pragmatically speaking.

It fits a message that the organization will not tolerate derogatory comments upon woman involved in the sport.

As for scantily clad women, not that I particularly agree with it, it's a marketing technique. Do not try and tell me that there isn't a difference between that, and "allowing" a fellow driver to belittle a team based on gender

Ok, I understand, even though you didn't realy answer my question.

It is ok in the name of marketing to present a derogative image that some would call exploitation or vulgarity, but you cant take the piss verbaly (even if it is to what i supect would be mates)

I think I prefered the 1970's.

Well I guess I may have too.
Please don't miss understand me, I think there is a Long way to go for woman in sport, and this does seem a bit silly in the larger picture, However I don't think it would have been appropriate for them to do nothing.

Agreed!!

The irony is, I would never of heard about the pu$$y wagon if the motor sport body gave a more appropriate response.
Something tells me this name is now going to stick, in purely an unofficial context of course.

Both the women in bikinis, and the women driving the car have made a choice to be involved, and both groups would know that being admired (for looks &/or skill) comes with the territory.

However in making that choice they should not be expected to sign up for sexist abuse - in both cases the race track is their work-place, and they should not have to tolerate what is in essence a form of bullying.

Cheers

Alec

... and then his comment about 'a pad change with wings'.

Tacky.

I don't get it at all. Pussy waggon is the sort of mild expression the girls I know would dream up for themselves. What's derogatory, let alone deeply offensive, to any normal person?

Sexism? Bullying? Garbage.

$25k too much? David, his team and many of his competitors might choose their words with a little more caution in future.

The owners of the race know full well the only real way to expand their audience is to reach out to women. I imagine sexism probably runs counter to that objective.

Hmm, Interesting idea.

And as everyone knows, woman just love the sight of a younger better looking women in minuscule amounts of clothe nearly as much as they like watching a rev head in a V8 go round and round and round and round and round and round a round track.

Here we go.

Massive massive crash for Chas Mostert in qualifying. The car is f'd. It took out a marshal cage too. Hopefully the marshalls got out ok.

The name has a somewhat different connotation

Beware coarse language in the link

Urban Dictionary: Pussy Wagon

One such vehicle is featured in the Quentin Tarantino movie "Kill Bill" as well the name used the movie Grease,

Referring to a person's vehicle as a mobile place for sex, and implicating the driver in the act seems pretty offensive to me.

This thread could be gainfully be relocated to the pond IMO.

boy that is really tacky.

And the bogan radio presenters audibly winced. On Triple M/Bogan of all things.
Reynolds needs to quickly to have a training course in 'brain activate before talking' training.
 Brendan.

Here we go.

Not sure its all that clear cut, Jo.

Who watches the extreme makeover shows, the Dragon's Blood infomercials or buys the women's magazines, or buys onto the beauty myth in general? The feminist perspective on beauty pageants is not positive but more than a 2.5 million women a year in the US participate and I would imagine the audience is predominantly women too.

I think its wrong to assume the sight of scantily clad women is unappealing to many women. (In fact, many of the women I knock about with would be positively turned on by the sight of the bikini girls trackside and switch off when the flag falls - but that probably says more about the company I keep...)
