renault 8 Gordini

I was under the impression from what I had found on the net the caravelle was the US version of the floride - incorrect?

The caravelle hardtop sound like the one to get if you can find one.

Nah.. All Caravelles are based on 8 running gear. All but the last Florides are essentially Dauphine based ...or something like that. I suspect that Simon has already explained this in detail. There are real air scoops on all early (ie: "real") Florides because they feature the Dauphine cooling system layout...the opposite arrangement to an 8 or 10, the radiator etc sits towards the front of the car,not at the tail.

Some of the US Caravelle sites feature heavily modified vehicles, often with R1135 motors and running gear. You will find that most of the Caravelle sites are listed on the Renault Ring accessible via Katriina's Renault Centre. Worth a look.

cheers!

Do they slip in a five-speeder at the same time?[/QB][/QUOTE]

Ray, where in God's name would you find one? Renault 5 speed boxes don't seem to surface anywhere often.

I have seen a butchered floride featuring a 5 speed ZF transaxle and a BMW engine, Torana disc brakes and tastefully fitted square headlamps and Torana tail lights.

What the transaxle came out of beats me, but somehow it was mated to what looked like the orignal Renault half shafts...wierd. Crazy really. It was an unfinished project, covered in deep rust and basically I think it has never been started (no fuel system fitted)

Just as well really, as the thing would have been absolutely dangerous.

cheers!

ZF? As in De Tomaso? That lumpy sort of ZF that they used to use in things like the Elfin 400 etc?

I thought James Corbett had a few five speeders of different types when he was there in Northgate... Bruce Collier used to talk about them as if they grew on trees...

Would the Fuego box be adaptable?

I dunno where the ZF came from Ray, but it was a proper transaxle....beats me. I thought maybe from a VW....but I don't have any idea if VW ever used a ZF transaxle...your guess is as good as mine. I keep intending to go back and buy that wreck as it has a complete soft top mechanism and a lot of detail fittings for the hardtop that would come in handy for the Floride carcass in my carport. The rest of the thing is really beyond redemption.

As for the 5 speed transaxles as in 8G...try finding one. My guess is unless you jack up some bastard's G and pinch it you won't have any luck...not even in la belle France. If you locate one let me know and I'll buy you a slab of Coopers.

cheers!

If you were going down the front wheel drive transaxle route you would need to build a complete IRS like Damien. The transaxle on the rear engine Renaults supports the swing axle set up. I don't think you can modify the front wheel drive transaxles to do this, otherwise I reckon Damien would have done it by now.

cheers!

Maybe 7 years ago Jim Andrews in Brisbane sold a light blue 4CV with R8G 5speed and limited slip to, I think, South Aus.It had been set up with a 16TS motor, and a radiator in the front, as well as 5 pedals across the floor. (fiddle brakes) The motor was removed when it was sold, but no Renaultfile seems to have heard of the car again.
Alan.

Unfortunately that lovely car (I saw it at Jugiong in 1987) was raped of its mechanicals by the buyer in SA. The motor that was fitted went into a Lotus Europa (not Europa's on this lists one) and I think the gearbox went into a Lotus racing car. What happened to the shell is unknown.

Also the Floride was known as the Caravelle in the States. It was considered Floride was too close to Florida and may cause buyer resistance in other US states. Weird really.

The Caravelle nameplate was first used by Renault on a base model version of the Fregate.

If you want to know more try www.renaultcaravelle.com it's a North American Caravelle and Floride site with some really useful technical downloads (eg: handbook and repair inventory)

Aaron,
I had a Caravelle in South Africa and I fitted a 18 turbo motor in it. It is easy because everything goes in its original place. The back panel was used for the intercooler and rad in front. Cooling via the air intake at the back is not enough for that hp. I transfered the computer and all the safety cut-outs as well and used 13" mags with 175's at the back and 175\70 in front. It worked very well and is a good tourer that laughs at any incline. Used it at a few Gymkhanas as well but it becomes tricky with the lag around a hairpin or figure 8 etc. The normal g/box setup is used by fitting the 18 bellhousing because the comp pickup must be mounted.

The 16 family of motors (motor alone) are heavier than the 8/10/12 family.
Probably because the block has more volume of metal in it as it needs to be stronger.
The heads alone are heavier and probably the cranks which again are bigger to be stronger.

I dont't know how i missed this thread so far, but here's my tuppence worth,
IRS in to the 8/10 etc. is a pain in the butt and unless you get the axles shortened, your in for some serious guard flaring. The track of the R12/16 is 190mm wider. I've been fooling with it for 12 mth's & it still has slight bump steer in the rear, so either or both the camber bar & tie rods are not positioned correctly, however it should be finished soon about to install the EFI Computer and fuel lines & f/pump

That will be the relative length and/or angle of the tie rod, Damien...

The tie rod, if not parallel to and on the same level as one of the wishbones, has to be at the proportionate angle and length between them.

If you want a total explanation, call me on 0411 280 267.

Well I'm now an official 8G owner.

Spent most of yesterday cleaning it up and fixing minor things, and I'm atually quite impressed at how it came up. I dont think it had seen a good polish for quite a while.
I had plans to get it painted but now I think I'll hold off for a bit cause it dosn't really need it.
Next thing I wanna get fixed is the window rubbers and seals.
I'm goin to take some rubbers into rare spares and see if they have anything close, to the rubbers I've got.

Really want to get the 5 speed up and goin, I'm not to sure who the best person is to take it to.
It has a R10 4speed in it at the moment.
The 5 speed has a damaged cog somewhere. Sounds like it could be $$$$$

When I get a quality Digital camera I'll post some pic's in the gallery.

Congratulations on the acquisition! I think the box is more than a damaged cog though from what I've heard. It sounds like the cog travelled through the gearbox, a littoral cog of mass destruction

Yeah, there's not much room inside for these things when they get loose, they get tossed from gear to gear and inflict damage along the way.

Gear Repair Company in Sydney might be worth talking to. They're in Greenacre.

They would be able to cut down the gears that are damaged, weld rings on and recut the gear.

A mate of mine bought yet another 8 G not too long ago. The 5 speed on that was dodgy. The selector shafts are bent and lock the thing up. Hard to fix apparently and impossible to acquire new and not yet discovered second hand in oz or europe. I guess anything is possible if you have the dollars. I can't see why new rods cant be machined up, but for whatever reason a very reputable Renault mechanic here didn't think this would work out too well. He also said that the boxes aren't that robust in that regard.

In the end he swapped the 5 speed box with a 4 speed from an 1134 that he had in bits, the car still goes like a shower of shit...but my mate's still looking for the parts for the 5 speed.

Good luck.

cheers!

Spectrum Rubber, Incorporating Old Auto Rubber Co. They were helpful when I rebuilt my 10.. ended up replacing all the door and boot/bonnet rubbers etc with their stuff. Worked out well. However I wonder how good their online system is.

Apparently they sell EFI hose for the Dauphine. Perhaps they also supply the EFI system too? :D

Back in 1991 I bought a pair of windscreen seals from a Germany and brought them back for a friends 8G.
They were expensive but when you need them...you need them.
I got them at TREICO ...see treico.de. They are now a Mecaparts dealer also.
If anyone needs any of the german price listings translated, let me know in a private email.
Treico have been around forever and are not simply reselling Mecaparts gear.
