Some advice re the water pump for a 1970 R16 TS. The manual states that the gasket is put on dry, but some other advice I have had said use a sealant as well. I was thinking of using Hylomar to be on the safe side, would this be OK. This is a new water pump, and the surface on the engine block looks to be in good condition. Any advice appreciated.

I use a little Hylomar on one side, the pump side only, not on the head side. It seals very well and easier to remove in future if necessary. I'm sure there will be many other opinions.

Check whether the gasket thickness is the same.
Sometimes thicker gaskets are used to ensure pulley alignment is correct

I admit to using grease on the gasket also, and particularly never seize or grease on the bolt threads. Same reason as Col, gasket remains pliable and does not stick.
