    Default 205 GTi valve clearances

    Hello all while the engine is out of the car I decided to do a valve clearance check.Peugeot specs are :

    Inlet = 0.15 to o.25mm.
    Exhaust = 0.35 to 0.45mm

    cam pulley end

    pot 4 = EX 0.33 IN 0.18

    pot 3 = IN 0.23 EX 0.38

    pot 2 = EX 0.39 IN 0.23

    pot 1 = IN 0.22 EX 0.38

    flywheel end

    Do these look good enough ?, or while I'm replacing the timing belt should I aim for more uniform specs.

    Whilst they are within spec., the exhaust clearances are way too large, which makes the engine very noisey. It will be a lot more pleasant if you can get the exhaust between 0.012-0.013"

    That would be 0.30mm - 0.33mm for the exhaust.
    With the cam off should I shoot for the inlet mid spec of 0.20mm, or at least bring that pot 4 up a little.
    Thanks Doug

    No, inlets are fine. Any work there would be a wasted effort. Just fix up the exhausts in order to quieten them down. I know 0.30mm is outside of spec but it will be fine. Trust me on this one. The exhaust needs to be more because the valve heats up more, increasing its length. However, the 205 exhaust valve is not that long that it needs a huge clearance.

    Thanks for that Peter, I will be changing the timing belt, tensioner and water pump some time this week, so not much extra effort for the exhaust shims.

    cam pulley end

    pot 4 = EX 0.34 IN 0.18

    pot 3 = IN 0.23 EX 0.31

    pot 2 = EX 0.33 IN 0.23

    pot 1 = IN 0.22 EX 0.32

    flywheel end

    After replacing crankshaft, camshaft and diff seals, I got back to the valve shims. I had a spare head so between those shims and shuffling a couple from the original head, I came up with exhaust clearances as above, without having to buy shims. And I got to use my digital micrometer again, oh well back in the box for another year.
