Default Difference between 3 and 4 pin O2 sensor 205 gti

Just wondering what the difference is. Obviously one has 3 wires and the other 4. Can I use a 4 in place of a 3? I have many lying around but none of them the 3 pin type. FWIW, the 4 pin type plugs straight in, but I guess thats to be expected...

Yes. The extra wire in a 4pin o2 sensor is the earth. It ensures a good earth instead of relying on the contact through the exhaust system.
