Just acquired a 330-24 gearbox. It looks sound and it had a thick layer of oil and assorted crud protecting it from premature oxidation... Decided to address the oil leaks, install it and see how it goes.
1) What is the best way to get the side seals out - I have disembled the gearbox and have the bearing carriers out.
2) there is what appears to be the remains of a fibre washer/gasket at the base of the cylindrical case that holds the needle bearings on the halfshaft pivots (trunions). There are none in the gasket set, are they critical and what is their purpose?
3) Is there any product on the market that is superior to the Permatex aviation sealant for sealing the halves? (been a while since I've done a Renault gearbox...)
4) Any general tips re getting these boxes not to leak?
All the best
