Default 505 SR instrument bulb types

Does anyone know the types/designations of bulbs used in the early 505 dashes, including the instrument illumination lights and the warning lights? I'd like to replace them with LEDs. Thanks.

Anyone? If not then I'll have to remove the steering wheel's 5 bolts and try to release the instrument surround's tricky clips etc etc. No big deal but I thought someone might know the type of bulbs used.

    I just hunted up a 504 cluster.

The lamps are fitted with twist in holders

The lamps are all glass type with wire contacts.
    All dimensions in mm
    Lamp envelope is 9.58 diameter
    Lamp base is 3.18 wide
    Lamp base is 9.26 wide
Contacts are spaced at 6.5 approx
Overall length top of envelope to bottom of base 22.26 approx

If you use LED globes replacements make sure you check them before fitting the cluster back. The holders are not position sensitive LEDs are polarity sensitive. You 50% getting it wrong the first time. The dimmer rheostat will no longer work.

Personally, I would buy some leds and 560 ohm (guess only - check the LED rated current and work off a 15 v voltage) resistors and solder them straight to face of the copper printed circuit board. Then seal up the holes where the holders were fitted.

Less connections, permanent job and not contacts to give trouble.

The clusters are easy to pull apart.

EDIT: very sorry this is 504 info - I have to find the 505 dash - please wait until tomorrow.

OK 505 use a very similar system but the lamps are much smaller:

The lamps are all glass type with wire contacts.
    All dimensions in mm
    Lamp envelope is 4.8 diameter
    Lamp base is 2.6 thick
    Lamp base is 4.4 wide
Contacts are spaced at 2.4 approx
Overall length top of envelope to bottom of base 17.1 approx

ah thanks Robmac. That's great info. I should be able to find the correct LED globes from those dimensions. Why the resistors? To dim them down? And are the illumination lamps the same as the warning lamps?

yeah the resistor is for brightness, but I've noticed that Jaycar now sells LED replacments for these style of cluster light.
Lets just say we have a few pugs about!

Thanks Hipcrostino. These look like the right ones from the Jaycar catalogue-type T5 B8.5D:

only one way to find out! Just pull out the cluster and have a look. I think its going to be a combination of the two

Thanks. The 1983 had the older 'round' style instrument cluster did it, rather than the more modern 'square' GTi style?
