    Default 205 gti compression ratios

    Hi all,
Just bought a very tidy 1988 205 gti and I'm in love.

I was wondering if anyone can tell me the compression ratio of the aussie 205 gti as I've heard it's lower than the Euro spec. I apologise if this has been asnwered elsewhere - I did search but couldn't find anything.

If it is lower, what creates the variation? i.e. piston compression height, bigger cylinder head chambers.

    Cheers,

    Chez

Depends on which model/engine code, but both lower the European version at 9.6:1. Yours will be DFZ.

S1/S2 with DFZ engine: 8.4:1 from small dish in piston and large chamber

S3 with DKZ engine: 9.2:1 from large dish in piston and small chamber

    Thanks Peter.
8.4! Sounds like I'd need to hunt a DKZ head if I want to up the compression for a longer duration cam. Is this the path people usually go with these things if they're chasing a bit more poke but keep the 8v?

    Yep

DFZ/DKZ combo gives 10.5:1 and with a cam, quite a hot package. I have driven a 205 with this setup and it goes very nicely

Be careful, you may find as I did that the compression is too high.
I had around 230 psi compression readings and even with programmable timing couldn't stop it pinging on 98 octane.
Even my UK spec 1.9 8 valve is on the verge of pinging with 9.6 to 1, standard distributor, but soon to get aftermarket management.

Hmmm. Is this to do with chamber shape or something? 10.5 although high is not outrageous. I've built an Alfa GTV with around 11:1 and no ping issues - with heavily domed pistons.

Anyone have/know of a DKZ head for sale, or where to get one?

    Thanks,

    Chez

I have a complete one on a 205 Si motor, same as DKZ in the head.

Seems to be a common problem with Peugeot engines, I remember the 504 1.8s used to ping badly on 8.3 to 1 and this was in the days of high octane leaded fuel!
