Default Identifying piece found in 306 engine cylinder.

    Hi,

Could someone please tell me where this belongs and what it is? (See pic) I found it in one of the center cylinders after pulling the head off. (306 XSi 16V 2L)

    Cheers.

Hello John, WHIM me your support ticket number and I'll have someone look into it.

    ............................................

More seriously, that piece is an oilway check valve. They're about $27 each, and a 16V head has one or two depending on the year of manufacture. They maintain residual oil pressure in the lifter feed galleries when the motor is shut off.

Valve specs (length and orifice diameter) vary slightly by model.

Given how grotty it is.... THere is no way it came out of the motor. My best guess it is a one way valve from one of the engine breather hoses.

It's one of the 2 oil gallery oil pressure valves there to maintain pressure to the hydraulic lifters.

As to how it got into the combustion chamber-

See my thread on removing them (when they're where their supposed to be ).

I'm sure it fell there when the head was removed. The problem is working out where it fell from!

Thanks for the info, guys. It is a valve (the ball is sprung).

    Hi again,

My engine is a '98 XSi. There is one gallery in which this valve seems to fit, but it is not apparent which way it is supposed to face. Is the ball supposed to be facing down or up (i.e can you see the ball when looking at the valve from the bottom - face - of the head)? Haynes does not seem to know about it, and I can't find any reference on the Web.

    Thanks again,
    John.

It's the same part no. as the Mi16 (0235 04) but fitted differently into the head. Ball should face the block to maintain oil pressure in galleries to lifters.

Was the engine rattly on start up?

Yes, that makes sense. No, the engine was not rattly on start-up. I think the o-ring is too flat to hold it firmly, so that's why it dropped out when the head was lifted off. Can the o-rings be purchased separately, or are they a standard size available after-market?

    Thanks for your help.

Another thing somebody might be able to comment sensibly on, is that this car has done around 200k kms, and yet there are hone marks in the bores. How long do they last? I always thought they were gone after a few thousand kms at most.

I don't think you can buy an OEM 'O' ring seperately. Try spare parts companies like Bursons, etc for something similar. Make sure anything you get is oil & heat resistant.

My Mi16 still had the bore hone marks at 270,000kms.
