    Default 195/55/15 or 195/50/15?????

I was running 185/60 /14 on the 205 and i thought that when you wnet to the 15's you went 195/55/15.
but the local tyre guy showed me that when that to keep the circumference the same you actually need 195/50/15 tyers.to keep the speedo in check.
i noted that his measurments were correct and bought the 195/50/15. yokie c drives..
then i notice most people with 195/55/15's on their 205 gti's
    in a word what gives????-BAZZ

    You got the right size. I know 185/65 - 14 equals 195/55 - 15, so to equal 185/60 - 14, 195/50 - 15 sounds right

195 50 is best from all reports... Apparently 55s tend to rub with people in the back.

factory s3 speedlines were shod with 55 series tyres. dunno why your tyre guy would think different.

go the 50 series tyres as theyll be cheaper, with a broader range available. and dont worry about the speedo... itd be off by only a few kays.

the only time the rears will rub in the back seat of a 205gti is during car park hide the salami sessions. and then i'd probably be more worried about the squeaking rear suspension!

There's about 3mm difference in circumference between 185/55R15 and 195/50R15. I went with 195s, and the price is definitely favourable

    absoloutly about 40 bucks a tyre cheaper.-BAZZ

reggie s3's were shod with 185/55 not 195/55.
as previously said the 195/50 is about 3 mls in diffenece to the oe circumference.
its going to be closer to true on the speedo than 195/55 which are about 6 mls bigger.
id rather have the speedo lookin like im going faster than i really am[very slightly] than with bigger tyres making it look like im going slower than i really am.
anyhow they are much cheaper and as you said a bigger range and they are whats closes to oe.
every tyre place i rang said the same thing.
and im really liking new yokie c drives instead of tyhe worn out pirrelli p6000.

I use 205/50/15, only because that is the size the R-spec tyres come in that I could get cheaply (Toyo RA-1s). Using XTC's method of calculating tyre size, it has a diameter of 586mm - very close to original. Note that those calcs don't allow for tyre squash (if that significantly affects distance travelled, I don't know).

Note also, especially (only?) with R spec tyres, the manufacturers do tend to fib on the sizing - and make them a bit wider (and lower?) than what is written on them.

205/50/15 RA-1s are really a bit too wide for the 6" wide Speedlines, so there is some loss of precision and grip.
