Default Which BE1 Gearbox do I have?

    Hello All,

I have a 205 with the 16V conversion. I need to replace the clutch, but as I did not do the conversion during my ownership, I am unsure of the gearbox.

I know that it is the BE1 box, but is it from a 205 or 405?

    If it is the BE1 from a 205, then it will require the 205 BE1 release bearing;
Otherwise it is from a 405 Mi16 and will use the 205 BE3 release bearing.

Am I right in that the pressure plate and friction plate for the clutch will be the same (1.9 405 Mi16), just the release bearing differs?

Before pulling the gearbox off the car, is there a visual difference?

I have tried to take photo from above, showing the clutch arm. But the battery tray does obscure the shot.

    Thanks in advance

I'm confused. That looks like a BE3 arm.

BE1 is identified with Reverse being next to 1st, right?

So it makes sense that the gearbox came with the 16v.

So I will need the standard 215mm 405 1.9 Mi16 clutch, but a BE3 release bearing. Didn't all clutches in the 405 Mi16 use the BE3 style bearing, regardless of BE1 or BE3 gearbox?

Correct. A clutch kit for a 1.9 Mi16/bx16v will come with the correct throw out bearing.

I though the clutch kit would be governed by the flywheel? I have a 405 flywheel with a 205 (Be3) gearbox thus I have to buy a 405 clutch....

Ok, is this because the 405 flywheel is 215mm, where as the 205 flywheel is 200mm - so your clutch plates will need to be from a 405? But the bearing is gearbox specific?

In my situation with my XU9 16V (Mi1
    6) engine, assuming the flywheel will be 215mm, all I require is a clutch for the 405 Mi16 1.9L.

Anyway, bit of an update today.

Good thing I didn't order a new clutch before removing the old one because the flywheel is from the 205, being 200mm in size.

So even though the gearbox is the 405 BE1, and the engine Mi16, the flywheel is from a 205. The clutch removed today was very worn which explained the slipping. The clutch was a paddle style, so perhaps a previous owner purchased the upgraded clutch, found it would not fit the Mi16 215mm flywheel, and used an 8v flywheel instead.

The 205 clutches are rubbish. Get an mi16 flywheel and clutch. All the bell housings are he same size where the clutch lives.

And while you are at it, check the plastic bushes for wear. I didn't recognise this problem in my 405 and broke 2 x clutch thrust bearings before I realised what the problem really was. I also have a spring over the lower portion of the clutch fork vertical shaft to prevent it applying any vertical load to the bearing retainer. Mine does get a pretty torrid time though - track work exclusively and I pop it between gears pretty agressively.

The clutch pulled out was a performance clutch from Walkers Garage in the UK, and will be rebuilt locally by a friend with a high quality compound.
    Otherwise I would source a 405 flywheel/clutch combination.
