Icon1 Russia starts work on Renault's low-cost Logan!

MOSCOW, April 5 (AFP) - The French car maker Renault launched production in Russia Tuesday of its low-cost Logan model, which will sell for between USD 8,000-12,000 (EUR 6,150-9,230).

Russia is the second country to produce the Logan economy car, following the lead of Romania. The Logan is expected to be on the market here in early summer.

Renault had initially wanted to hold the sales price to USD 6,000 dollars (EUR 4, 680). But company chairman Louis Schweitzer told a press conference here that such a price would have required "a degree of local integration and a production pace that were much too high."

The production unit of Renault's Russian subsidiary, Avtoframos, has the capacity to turn out 60,000 vehicles a year.

"If there is a need, it would be possible - provided we have the necessary authorisations - to double the factory's production capacity," Schweitzer said.

Renault hopes to have sold more than a million Logans worldwide by around 2010.

By the end of March more than 45,000 had been registered.

Renault and India's Mahindra group last month announced a joint venture agreement to build and sell the Logan in India beginning in 2007.

The Logan will be marketed under the brand of Mahindra Renault, with production scheduled to begin in the first half of 2007.

Renault seems pretty popular in Russia these days.

Last time I was in Moscow I saw a lot of Renault Symbols (a Clio with a boot), many more than a year before.
