Default Redbook and the Clio Cup 182

    Hello All,

This is my first post so I hope it goes well.

I previously had a new 06 Polo GTi and at the same time dreamed of the 182 cup. For whatever reason I went with the GTi had a blast and as time has gone on I still often think of buying a 182.

When I look at Redbook the high end price range is around $7,300. However, on carsales they are ranging from $12K down to the $7.5K, with the ones at $7.5K looking a bit rough so I would assume that would be at the lower range not the $7.3K that Redbook is quoting.

In short I am wondering what your opinions are on the correct pricing of a 182 cup or F1. Is Redbook wrong or are people expecting more than what they are worth?

I want to start looking immediately and want to go in with offers that are reasonable to the market. If $9K is reasonable and Redbook is wrong then I will pay $9K.

    Any guidance would be appreciated.

I’ve got details of a first-hand actual sale, rather than something heard from my best friend's, sister's boyfriend's, brother's girlfriend, who heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with a girl who heard about the sale of a totally mint Clio 182 for $20K at 31 Flavours last night.

The consecutive cousin of my Clio was traded last year for $7K, a week after the trade-in, the car appeared ever so briefly on Carsales for $8K, I’d say this was due to it being a good car. A 6/2005 build silver 182 Cup, it was likely one of the better ones around, 75K km, it was regularly serviced with regular gearbox oil changes, timing belt up to date (due late next year by time), and always garaged when not in use. The minus points being a minor shopping trolley dent below the rubbing strip on the LH door, and a steering wheel with tatty grips.

I doubt if used values have gone up over the last 12 months, if anything they are probably decreasing, so something at $12K would have to be exceptional, something at $7-8K would have to be good, then there are the rest (if not all) that are likely to garner nothing more than a shrug of the shoulders, as to whether they are worth it or not.

Keep in mind, the 172/182 are built around the timing belt, which is the reason a timing belt change (every 100K km, or four years whichever comes first) costs circa $2K to replace - full belts, pulleys, tensioner, harmonic balancer and water pump – yes, do them all at the same time for peace of mind and wallet by people who know what they are doing. Also check the gearbox (known to go pop), state of the brakes (whether the discs are due), headlamp deterioration, “soft surface” deterioration, rotted muffers, and steering wheel deterioration. So you really do want to find something where the servicing is up-to-date, otherwise costs can spiral.

Thanks for the thorough explanation Simon.
I used to work in the car finance industry and Redbook was the bible for second hand car values. Sometimes they are a little off though.
Your explanation clears up a lot of concerns I had. I think I'll be patient and see if a good example with up to date servicing turns up in that $7-8K range.

Join up on the Oz RS forum, and have a look at the cars that have sold or are being offered, it will give you a far better indication of prices.

Thank you. I signed up an hour ago. I think they might be having authentication issues there as I still haven't received an email to verify my account.

I assume you are thinking about this one on Carsales?

    Hi R8.
    Yes that's the one.
Looks wise it's exactly what I want and it's in Vic
Price wise at face value it seems high given the kms and as mentioned Redbooks valuation.
I will admit I haven't called the owner due to the price. I don't want to waste their time and I'm not one for haggling.

As per the recommendation above I did join the OzRS forum as well but I haven't been granted full access yet.
From the searching I was able to do on the forum it seems to have come from Sydney and has made it's way down to Melbourne.
Gut feeling for that particular price and car I would want 100K or lower kms.
Or am I expecting too much???

If you're free tomorrow morning and near Bayswater before 10:30, I can show you two 182's.
A 182 Sport that's our daily and a 182 Sport Cup Le that's getting repaired.
I have read that a Cup F1 and Cup Le have the same upgrades, I can't confirm this, but if you free I'm happy to show you around the cars and give you some helpful tips.

After 40 odd years in the Insurance industry (as a specialist motor underwriter) I can say the Red Book is more than useless on any vehicle that is less the very common.

Renault Sports are too rare for the Red Book to get realistic figures.

Do your own research as to what the market is asking then make your decision if the market is at a level you can play in.
