    1.6 205 gti gearbox conversion ???

    Hi,

I was wondering if any one was able to give me any advice on wether a 205 gti 1.9 litre gearbox will fit into a 1.6 205 gti.

My car was imported from the UK in 1998, and I don't think there are any 1.6 205 gti's in australia. It is an '84 model, and a 5 speed box.

    any help would be appriecated.

I know of atleast one 1.6 gti in melbourne.
Be1 and Be3 boxes should all bw interchangeable.
if they fit 1.6 boxes to 1.9gti's, why cant it be done the other way round.

From info I have gathered, it should work. I have seen that 405/306/205 g/boxes are the same pattern on the bell housing.

    Thanks for all the replies,

The gearbox is weird sometimes it's really hard to select gears and grinds from time to time. When I change to forth gear, I can hear a grinding noise.

But other times it really smooth, I have changed to gearbox oil and that helped a little.

I am probably just going to drive it until it dies completly. I got a quote for reconditioned gearbox, it ws $750 exchange, which seems reasonable for a 205.

    Cheers Dan.

jr, it's pretty common in the UK, the 1.6 box is better for acceleration but gearchanges can be quite frequent.
    3 205's?
you selfish.... have you got a spare one for me?
if you really want one and this one isnt available i'm sure we could find a decent one in the UK if you dont mind waiting 3 months.

    Danjham,

have you checked the condition of the linkages and ball joints / knuckles on the linkages?

Mine were done only a few months ago, and still gives me some greif when doing a cold change from 1st to 2nd, blip the throttle between the changes when cold and its ok.

The setting for the length of the selector shaft is very important to get a smooth shift, and if its moving about on the knuckles/joints, this can be enough to throw it out of kilter and grind the gears in some situations.

    jr,

and then there was 3 !!! you should get a 205CTi !! (saw one in unique cars a few months back in dark green)

There was a CTi for sale up at Gerry Cullens dealership in QLD.
I'm not too sure about them, a bit of a yes and no feeling.

I was just thinking jr could have all bases covered (almost).

The 205 Mi-16 for track days/rice boy wasting.
The 205 8 valver for more sedate driving when not feeling so frisky.
The 205CTi for some of these sunny days we qlders are lucky to get.

Would make a good photo !!!

Whilst there are very few 1.6GTi's around, all the 1.9 GTi's up until about 91 (ish) have the short ratio BE1 transmission. Mine's an 89' with the BE1 close ratio, reving at about 3200 at 100kms. So any box from a wrecker proir to 91' will give you the better ratios.

Why dont you put a 309 gti box in, same as the 205 arent they, perhaps slightly closer ratio's. The block casings for the 1.6 and 1.9 8v engines are the same. Putting a 309 GTI box on my 405 wasnt to difficult, just had to bend one of the arms abit.

Only problem is 309's arent all that common in Aus well not anymore.

I'm in the UK and am running the 1.6 'box alongside my 1.9-litre engine. I'm f***ing knackered so I'm sorry if anyone has already mentioned that they are interchangeable...

THE BOX WILL BOLT STRAIGHT UP TO YOUR 1.6
THE BOX IN YOUR 1.6 WILL BE THE SAME AS A 1.9 IT IS A BE15 EVER A S2 BE35 SHOULD WORK BUT THESE HAVE TALLER GEARING,CHECK THE GEAR SELECTOR RODS ESPECIALY THE BOLT ON THE MAIN CENTRE ROD THAT BOLTS UP TO THE CROSSMEMBER BEHIND THE ENGINE THESE TEND TO COME LOOSE SO TIGHTEN THAT AND PUT A LOCK WASHER IN OR SOMETHING,THE CONTROL RODS UP THE FRONT ARE ONLY $15 FOR THE LONG ONE AND ABOUT $10 FOR THE SMALLER ON ITS BEST TO JUST REPLACE THEM ANY PUT SOME GOOD TRANNY OIL IN TO HELP OUT THOSE SYNCRO MESHES.
