How are u mate as pat rafter would say.
    I didn't know 1984 gti's were around in
oz anyway i will try to help all gti's
have alloy heads which mean they have
some form of hardened seats your car
must have a cat i think all ozzie gti
do i could be wrong u should be able
to use unleaded i do know u will not
    needed octane booster because your
car was adjusted to our low grade fuel
if your car was meant to run super
but u want to run unleaded u will need
lead substitute addative to stop valve
    recession hope this helps.

Depends. if your running the european motor, (XU9JA) it has 9.6:1 compression. i did a motor convert in mine. now running 7 degrees advance and pings on optimax on hot days, and in the top end of the rev range. run an octane booster in that. but thats not the issue.

Hardened valve seats is the issue. I have no idea as to whether you can or not. my workshop manual says nothing about hardened valve seats. I would assume NO CAT as unleaded was not around in those days. This can cause a problem with the polloution laws as unleaded petrol burns, and produces noxious gasses, harmful to u and i, thats why the cat converts them to harmless NOS, or the like.

do you have an engine management computer and in jection or carburation? This will make no difference, just interested. . .

You should be able to run unleaded. the octane booster will only help with pinging, and a greater power output. if your worried about valve seats, you can get an additive, NOT OCTANE BOOSTER, which coats the valve seats like lead, and does the same job.

The additive is called "Valve Master".
