Your crazy using a s/h transmission in a 19 usless you can find a car that had the auto rebuilt yesterday and written off today (rear damage only).

Renault 19 automatic is the only car in the world where the auto and cam belt are due to be changed at the same service, that is if the auto will last as long as the cam belt.

We've got 2 R19's at work we are wrecking, both good condition cars, one is immaculate to look at and with 119,000 km on the clock would be very desirable except the auto is stuffed and therefore it's wrecking material only.

If you go for s/h please choose carefully as there a bugger to fit, unless you intend to fit it yourself you might have trouble getting a mechanic to do it because most mechanics I know hate doing a job twice.

David.

You could always see if the Auto transmission from a VW Golf will fit. I know they are the same box but I would asume the castings for mounts and the like would be different (but you never know your luck). The VW Golfs seem to be reliable (as far as I know anyway  )

I would also run the VW trans cooler....

P.S - Were those clips the right ones Dave???

Hi, i agree with David. No point getting a second hand box. It may be just as bad. As i've mentione before, the transmissions operate at too high a temperature. This tends to harden the rubbers on the pistons. The other problem is that the second forward drum is under designed. It has since been modified by Renault and it is as strong as and a work of art. Beware of welded ones.
Disagree, it's not difficult to change the box. You dont even have to remove the engine. We have done it. However, i still remove the engine usually as it does not bother me to do extra work. Not removing the engine involves a coule of jacks an muscle and 'skill'.
The transmission is not difficult to repair. Just work.
Cheers,
JoBo

That's a good point, I wonder if anyones tried it but I was talking to a VW specialist who said he doesn't mind doing 19 auto's because he's had so much experience rebuilding Golfs, so maybe there a pain too.

Replace an auto in a north/south Renault or rear drive Pug and see how easy that is then you'll agree the 19 is a bugger to fit.

Yes Richard those clips were right, the 12G is eternally greatfull.

David.

Andys autos in Broadmeadows has a smashed R19 auto with ~120 K km on it. If its cheap enough its worth a shot
