Bit of a nightmare finding places that will balance centreless rims (for the Xantia). I added to a blog but its on the Pug site.

I can only speak for Melbourne (inner north). Please add other locations/states etc as appropriate:

At Bob Jane Preston ask for Laurie to do the job (they were really persistent with my job and I attended twice to get it right)

Haven't used this JaxQuickfit Essendon provider but apparently they do the gig

Continental Cars in Punchbowl, Sydney have the equipment.
 
Ken Long Tyre Specialists in West Melbourne balanced my R16 centreless Rims back in 2013/2014. (138 Stanley Street West Melbourne). The old boy was very cheap from recollection.
 
I haven't tried them yet, but Mark Holland (Lion Autos) said that Kevin Kenny Tyres at Greenacres, NE Adelaide, can balance centreless wheels.
 
Should have asked him.....bob jane Salisbury was a little pricey

As Sparkey mentioned, it would be great help to up date place/s who does centreless rims (504) and Mags (406). Any reputable place in Canberra??

Hi all,

don't forget us early guys with the single centre hex key bolt on ID/DS up to 1965.

I don't think most of these suppliers could do these also, due to the centre bolt? Can anyone advise? If anyone knows of a shop that could do this in Melbourne please post.

I went to Eastland Tyres (Ringwood) on recommendation (about a year ago, tyres from Longstone) but they could not / did not balance my wheels after fitting. I was disappointed.

Your choices are:

1. Make sure there is no grease on the inside of the wheels. Given eearly D shafts always seem to have been over-greased through the years there is probably a layer of greasy crud there. Solution is sandblast and new paint. Then trust your Michelin tyres are true. That's pretty much what everyone else does.

2. Use an on-car wheel balancer. The best wheel alignment bloke in Bendigo (Mick from Bendigo mobile alignments) has one. I have one. I know of no others.

$75.00 to do 5 wheels. Nearly 2 years ago. Great service and still happy with the job.

hi Roger,

I removed AT LEAST half a kilo of grease from the (front) wheels before new tyres. When I finally get the car able to do a 200km round trip I will go see Mick. Or you!

Thanks for clarifying, I did suspect that the companies able to balance later wheels would struggle with the centre bolt. I know the Michelin X is supposed to be immune from balance issues but I simply don't believe it. Has anyone experience of the "put some (sticky?) beads / sand in the TUBE and let centrifugal force balance the wheel" suggestion I have heard about?

In the meantime how is that beautiful Safari going? Exceedingly well I trust.

For what it is worth..... When I got my wheels balanced the difference it made to the drive of the car was unreal. Keeping in mind that the wheels most likely hadn't been balanced correctly for f$#king long time because the previous owner was clueless.

Hello Mark,

If the wheels have ever been rotated the inside of the rears will be covered in crud too.

I have a feeling I once heard of someone who had machined an adapter from an early D hub to mount the wheels to a balancer, but I can't remember who.

Mick is a lot more experienced at using the machine than me. And he has a stock of weights, which I don't. I am happy to try though.

The safari is going fine. It's good to have at least one trouble-free car! I just told Shane in a PM about something completely different that at the moment I have 5 cars, a ute, a truck, 2 tractors and 4 farm machines that need some kind of repair. Everything from a height corrector clean to an engine transplant.

Jax in Blacktown will fit the tyres, take your money, then inform you that they can't balance the wheels. Left me really f'n impressed at 17.00 one Friday.
 
Bob Jane Tyres in Orlando Street is the only place in Coffs Harbour (and I would suggest probably between Lismore and Port Macquarie on the mid north coast of NSW) with the adapter for a 406 wheel balance. They dislike doing them but they do have staff that know how to use it and still only charge the standard $20 to do the front wheels.

Ditto Bob Jane in Tamworth - no-one else between there and the border.

They go through the motions, but don't always get it right first try. Took 3 goes to stop the steering wheel wobble above 100km/h in the 605 (spread over a couple of years - I don't go to Tamworth much).

So I suggest get wheel balance done in the morning, so you have time to get out of town for a test at highway speeds, and plenty of time to return to the tyre service if the balance isn't right :mad:.

PS - they supplied the tyres that they twice failed to balance correctly - Michelin Primacy LC!
