Drove home the 'new' wagon yesterday, about 700km. Into a whole new league here, doesn't slow down on hills !! (But does stop regularly at service stations, I don't want to know the mpg). My wife took it for a spin around the block when I got home and actually laughed when she pressed the accelerator - should have had the video camera handy. Bit of a change from the carby XN1.

Took some pictures earlier today.

I haven't climbed underneath to see how it's been done, but it seems the trans has been moved forward as suspected. There was a factory V6 sedan as a donor, and the wagon has taken the engine, box, variable assist power steer, front suspension and vented discs, and 15" alloys. I'm told the rear suspension has also been swapped from the V6, but exactly what this means is unknown at present ( IRS vs. live axle - surely the shocks are different ?)
Here's the under bonnet shots :

Judging by the mass of 'spares' that came with it, the entire front wiring looms must have been changed too - it has the V6 dashboard, climate control, heated front seats etc. Don't ask the price, just think of your jap-import-free-roads and all of the automotive support industry over there in Oz !! (Unfortunately Cars are fast becoming consumables here like in USA/Europe)

We thought the GR wagon was nice on the road, but this one really sails around the corners flat - and smoothly too. Seems even less bouncy than the 2l GR wagon.

A few small things to attend to - I'll have to adjust the kickdown cable as it's driving me mad - it happens at about 2/3 full throttle with the result that when you want to overtake from 100km/h it whacks all the way down to 2nd (around 4500rpm !!) then backing off a little goes up to 3rd and then she really takes off before dropping into top at a considerably faster speed. ( Speedo goes up to 240km/h on this one, room to stretch it's legs...)

I'll be talking to the guy who did the conversion soon to get some more info. Will put additional pics at

in the next few days.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to my PRV transplant knowledge so far, I've had heaps of useful emails !

Is there an engine under those hoses?

:D Just kidding. Looks like a mighty nice wagon, and I'm sure it's an inspriring drive. And an awesome conversion, if they did all the interior/seats/etc.

I take it a few/more than a few 505 V6s were sold in NZ?

... and if you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost you?

Well, engine bay shots always look way more scary than in real life ! The even-fire EFI V6 seems quite well thought out, although I'm not looking forward to adjusting valve clearances. The K&N style air filter is not in a good place for picking up cold air, esp with no fan cowling, so I may change it. (Oil bath from 604 maybe) As an electronics engineer, I want to get some low-down diag/test stuff on Bosch injection to make sure this baby is not drinking more juice than is absolutely necessary.

I paid NZ$3000, which is not too bad considering a tidy 505 GR/XN1 wagon can still get $2-3k. Let alone the V6 engine/box/alloys and TIME ! I had previously missed out on a 505 V6 wreck at NZ$900. And as a bonus, the aircon/climate control works (great, now down to 12mpg in summer....)

Measured the sway bars during a break today, front is 27.5mm, rear 16mm(!).

Sounds like a bargain, at least by Aussie standards.

You're right about engine bay shots.

I'd hold out some hope that adjusting the kickdown will help you a bit in the economy stakes, sounds like at the moment the trans is keeping the motor on the revved-up side.

Otherwise, maybe a gas conversion?

i reckon move that air filter and you will gain economy
where it is now it is just sucking in pure hot air
try and get it in front of the radiator if you can or down the rear of the engine

How many 505 V6s in NZ? I might be spending a little bit of time over there in the next year or so, and a cheap car is a LOT cheaper than a rental if you want it for a few months. I keep hearing of all the cars NZ got and we didn't, such as (correct me if I am wrong) 305s, 106s,post 1980 Escorts, Sierrasand a few others.

There were only 52 305's sold through the Peugeot dealers. A workmate had an '86 305 diesel import from Pomgolia it was as quiet and responsive as a Laser/323 but you didn't feel the bumps and it hung on around corners. Great waste of a model, import duty is the killer. We have 309's going real cheap, even GTi's. They kind of got a boost late in their model run from the popularity and good reputation of the early 405's around 88/89. I've only seen a couple of V6 505's around, part supply is going to be interesting for my engine.

For a cheap holiday Peugeot that is relatively easy to find : 505GTi, 309 inc Gti, 405 including 4x4 and Mi16, or even a V6 605 !! all to be had for <= NZ$2000 on a good day. 205's are sorta becoming popular as people realise there more to motoring than riced-up legacys etc.

We only got MkI & II escorts up till around '83 then a big gap until around '96 or so when a new range came in. We sure got sierras, but only wagons in any number. They sold like hotcakes in the early - mid 80's, but did suffer from being a bit of an orphan when it came to parts backup from the UK. Only a handful of sedans around.

Adjusted the kickdown last night, although the threaded cable adjust is all the way to one end of its travel, and it is almost right. Can actually change into 4th at 60k's now ! Maybe the trick with this V6 motoring is to rip the needle off the petrol gauge, and just wait for the light to come on ! Mind you, we all piled into it last night and my wife drove - the needle did drop as much....

That's interesting. Are you sure it hasn't got 0.5mm of paint on it?

I guess that would be alot of paint considering that I've never measured more than about 0.2mm difference between painted and unpainted sections of 505 swaybars.

Hi Jason,

Congrats on the new car. VERY NICE indeed! I have an XN powered 505 SR Wagon also. I know EXACTLY what you mean about the lack of power... :) No wonder your wife laughed. :)

Can you tell me what the gap is between the rear of the passenger-side head and your air-con box? Just curious as to how much space they've managed to get there.

Regards,
John Lane.

John, there is certainly a sizeable gap between the air intake upstand and the standard black firewall liner. Right on the edge of the cyl head there has been a small section of the orig liner cut out and a piece of silver foil used. I seem to be able to get my fingers around there though, I'll take some better pics.

Dave, I thought those swaybar figures would raise your eyebrows ! I checked it in a few places with digital calipers, but all were 27.5. I'll verify it next time I'm under there.

What gearbox does it use?

And is the tailshaft/torque tube lengthened and the mount moved forward, or is there some type of extension on the gearbox?

Maybe the mention of the 'rear end' or 'rear suspension' could mean they've used the ratio from the sedan differential?

I talked to the guy who did the conversion last night. Most important thing I had confirmed was that if he had known it was for sale he would have bought it back (it's had two owners since) Whew!

Tailshaft & torque tube both have been lengthened to reach the back of the beloved ZF4HP22. Yep, I know there is a lot of bad heresay out there, but the smoothness and speed of change impressed the owner of a new Mitsi VR4 turbo here at work! They are a really common box, used on loads of cars, all with the same ratios.

Well guessed as usual Ray ! The diff was rebuilt with the V6 innards, a small amount of machining involved. Not an LSD one tho. On S2 505 Estates there is a hideous two part cradle mount for the gearbox rear (I know from painful experience - when the rubber bushes flog out you get...knocking noises at speed!) which has been modified.

I Definately have to get the thing on a hoist for some pics. Drove the GR/XN1 Wagon yesterday for a comparison, Arrgghh what a sloth, but only last week I used to love it ! Drove the 504 to work today, (has 505GTi rear shocks and front bar) much more like the V6 setup.
