I have a 508 2 litre HDi and the oil options are a bit confusing, if one follows the PSA spec. to the letter.
Is it possible to buy Total oil in Sydney?
Otherwise what are the recommendations?

This must be the most discussed subject in AF. There are many threads if you search for them. There's a Duckduckgo search box on the home page.

No you can't easily obtain Total oils in Sydney, though you can from the NSW country and interstate distributors, eg Onshore in Qld. Distributors have a minimum package of 3 off 5L containers in a carton. The Sydney distributor has no interest in home service work, and not much for retailers.

There are a few other brands that qualify, and these are mentioned in the many threads. Unfortunately some of them are not sold in small retail quantities, but others are. The main criterion is low ash, C2 grade, to avoid gumming things up, particularly the particle filter.

Hi If there is not one already, a Sticky on this subject would save answering the same question, with the same information again and again.

I buy from Onshore for my KIA 20l containers & am on the GC. They deliver usually in a day or 2.

It is frustrating how difficult this Total oil is to find. The only place you can buy it in Sydney is from the dealers and it likely wont be cheap.

I recently learned that this oil has PSA approval: https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/mobil-mobil-1-esp-engine-oil-5w-30-5-litre/627879.html

I will buy 5L as soon as it goes on 30% or greater discount.

I presume the Peugeot specialists all use Total too (can anyone confirm?) and maybe they will sell some if you ask? Even on my service records the oil brand/type is not listed. I know the 1.6THP engine in particular is very fussy with oil, needs low ash for good performance so I want to stick with Total or Mobil only. Previous service centre always stuck a Caltex lubricants service sticker on the windshield, hope that's not the oil they were using. I see a lot of people servicing Peugeots in places like MyCar, Ultratune or general mechanics and I do wonder what oil they might be using..

Castrol Magnatec Professional C2 complies, and may have been used. It is sold only in bulk quantities, and is popular at service places. I have seen 20L drums at a country distributor.

It's the HDI engines that are fussy about oils. The non-Sydney Total distributors are only a courier away.

I HAVE BAUGHT A 20 LITRE DRUM OF MULTI TRANS FROM THE SYDNEY DEALER WITH NO PROBLEMS FROM MEMORY ,WE HAVE A NUMBER OF PEUGEOT/ CITS IN THE FAMILY THAT USE IT ,I DONT REMEMBER IF THEY REQUIRED AN ABN BUT I HAVE ONE ,THEY WERE ON THE SOUTH SIDE, WHO KNOWS THERE POLICY MAY HAVE CHANGED OR I JUST GOT LUCKY ,I PICKED IT UP AT THERE DEPOT .PUGS ALSO USED ON SHORE, TWEED HEADS

Tweed store closed.
I used to buy there.
Now they have 2 reps one in Northern NSW other in Sth Qld. call 07 number & they'll drop off 20 litre drum when next near you. Good Service I've found. JG

My son recently had his 2021 Partner Van (1.2 3 cylinder turbo) serviced at Trivett Parramatta and they listed the oil used as Castrol 5W-30. I presume this would be the Magnatec Professional C2 that Seasink mentioned above.

Penrite oil as it is 100% Australian
No problems for petrols. We are talking about diesels here, and Penrite's C3 only comes in 5W-30. It isn't on every shelf. Some of the HDIs require 0W-30.

The EP6 turbos are better off with low ash oil also.

that would figure i think the rep lives at Pottsville.

A sticky should be created to provide the following information.

  • List of approved oils. (If that is what people use during warranty)
  • Cross reference of approved oils to ACEA, API, ILSAC and JASO standards. example: approved oil may be C3 rated.
  • Explain the difference between approved oil vs suitable for or recommended.
  • Provide approved data and not opinions as seen on some oil forums that result in endless and sometimes aggressive posts.
  • Explain the different oil categories, example: A3/B4, C3 and so on.
  • Provide a list of approved oil companies.

Way back in 2011 AF member Diesel_vert did the research and posted----

Using an "approved" oil means that PSA is liable for whatever damage is caused by the lubricant.

Using an oil that is "recommended for...", "meets or exceeds...", "equivalent to...", etc, means liability is transferred to the lubricant manufacturer.

PSA have an oil standard for diesel engines equipped with a particulate filter, known as B71 2290. As far as I know, the following oils have been approved to that standard:

Castrol Magnatec Professional C2 5W-30
Esso Ultron ESP Formula P 5W-30
Fuchs Titan GT1 PRO C-2 5W-30
Mobil 1 Formula ESP 5W-30
Mobil Super 3000 Formula P 5W-30
Motul 8100 Eco-clean C2 5W-30
Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5W-30
Total Activa Ineo ECS 5W-30 (France only)
Total Quartz Ineo ECS 5W-30 (Export markets)

Unlike other OEMs, the list of approved oils is very small

Excellent post covering diesel engines but perhaps needs updating. We should cover off petrol engines in a separate sticky as there is some confusion regarding petrol engine oil specifications.

It appears that PSA use a one size fits all specification for both petrol and diesel engines (PSA-2290). My 2013 208 GTI has a Total sticker calling up ACEA A3/B3, A5/B5 and API SL/CF.

The owner’s manual calls up B71-2296 or PSA-2290, they have very different specifications. If PSA-2296 in 5W30 viscosity can be used, then more options become available as PSA-2296 is an ACEA rated oil.

The Warranty and Service Information Handbook supplied with my 508 HDi makes no mention of the specific model, but gives 3 B71 oil generic oil recommendations, presumably based on different climatic conditions around the world.
If I choose B71 2269 they recommend Total Quartz 9000 5W40 but I have found a few alternatives to Total which mention the PSA standard.
Penrite don't have a suggestion.
Otherwise it's
The Mobil product has a PSA spec. of B71 2297, no idea which models that applies to. Is it more a recent spec. than 2296?
The Fuchs is looking most attractive at the moment and available at Bursons.

Why B71 2269 for a diesel? This is ACEA A3/B4 with some extra requirements.
Mobil 1 ESP is approved for HDIs, as in the post above.

Perhaps the attached PDF can help in producing a sticky and provide the ability to cross reference with other oil brands.

I apologise if the information has already been provided in the past.
