So the Red Si has been ticking along slowly and with the help and support of a few people on this forum here’s where I’m at:
- brake system more or less entirely replaced and front upgraded to 266mm 206 brakes
- 13” steelies replaced with 14” pepperpots and fresh rubber
- bunch of trim pieces (lenses, lights, mirrors etc - again thanks to the forum)

After getting the brakes working and finally taking for a spin around the block was a big boost for morale!

Next on the list
- new exhaust booked in for next week (although I don’t mind the “sans rear muffler” note)
- RWC

Couple of things still to do that I need some advice on:
1. Need to do a proper coolant flush, when removing the lower radiator pipe how do you access it? With the aircon unit in the way I’m assuming that something else needs to be removed?
2. Fuel gauge doesn’t work, moves a little on start up but is showing - any ideas on how to troubleshoot? Would the dropping the tank when I did the brakes have buggered it?

Cheers!

The lower radiator pipe just connects to the steel pipe under the driver's wheel well, hidden behind the plastic guard.

The cluster drives through the sender to earth, so its possible you disturbed that, if you haven't yet fiddled with the cluster. Mine flutters every now and then since changing the bulbs in the cluster.

1. The hose should be able to come off without removing any ac bits. Undo metal pipe from body and loosen all the clamps to give yourself plenty of play.

2. Under back seat on passenger side is the fuel gauge sender thingo. its under a plastic cover. It unscrews from the top and lifts out. Its worth looking at that to see its moving freely up and down as they gunk up. It sends the signal to the dash gauge.

Update: It rides again!
So it got to a point that I’d booked in the RWC but ran out of time to get the last few bits and pieces done so decided to leave it with Paul at universe motors to take care of which he did. A couple of $urprises in the form of a new windscreen required and an engine mount but I’m happy to left with a great little car that’s well sorted.

Still need to sort out the fuel level and there’s a few interior trim bits, and a few dings to get taken out but all in all stoked to get it on plates finally!

That's a great little car @Jared - will have to update its status in the 205 Si Register - not sure how many go from unregistered to registered. I think the usual path is registered to unregistered to a steering rack in a GTI + scrap metal.

Cheers Matthew, I’ll first pull it out as it might just be gunked up but will keep this in mind

Let me know what interior bits you need. I may have some parts I can donate.

Hi Richard,

I’m after the little surround that goes in the rear trim for the seatbelt & the small bit of trim that goes on the outside passenger side please ?

Does anyone have experience with this model radio? It lights up and when I turn the volume up there’s a tiny bit of static coming through the speakers but not much else.

I know you need some little tabs to push in either side to pull it out but are they reasonably generic or do you need a specific pair?

If you lived in QLD I'd recommend you sell that radio to someone who wants original and get a Blaupunkt Barcelona 200 or similarly retro looking bluetooth head unit. My colleague just got flogged 1k and 4 points for changing a song on his phone and the fine took months to reach him while going past the same camera every day.

Jared I have the rear trims for the pillar you can have since I replaced mine. Tabs are broken but I think you can use silicon to hold it on. Pm me your address. Might also have a spare rear seat belt trim

I’m in Vic and even still it’s not a bad idea. Mate of mine but a blaupunkt in his old Honda and it looks pretty good

That’d be great mate! I’m tempted to order a tab repair set from Baker BM anyway. Will PM address

That radio is fine. You just need to make sure it is connected to the aerial with the coax on the back (and the integrity of the coax and plug). You do not need to have the little tools to extract it. If you can reach behind the plastics, at the back you will find the whole thing is held in place with one big nut on a 6mm stud poking out of the back of the console. Undo the nut and the whole thing (radio and surround) will slide out.

I would also suggest you check your speakers. When I checked the ones in the spares car I bought (92 Si, wrecked by a front impact) they were all shagged so couldn't use any of them in my GTI. I am telling you this because they were shagged by age not fiddling with the system. They were all intact (as in nobody had been in there) but the paper cones were all disintegrated around the outer edge. The Si was very well maintained as opposed to my GTi.

If you do however find the radio is shagged, I have an identical one or two spares (one out of my own Si, one out of the GTi).

That said, I would suggest if you want to change the radio, go for an OEM Honda out of early 2000 cars (doesn't matter which, they're all the same as long as they are single DIN). I would go for a full logic control but that's just me. Those are well made high quality radios. If you can get the speakers with the head unit, even better. You can get a unit with cassette or with CD, whatever blows your budget (expect to pay zip to 20 bucks). Don't be daft and go for aftermarket. Aftermarket will never beat OEM quality of a serious manufacturer who employs specialist engineers to spend time and money to make sure they get it right. Some had codes some didn't (it was up to the buyer to request the code be eliminated when purchasing the car new). Make sure you get the code if it has one and test it. Honda can sometimes help if you have the radio numbers or the car's VIN.
