Hi everyone,

I'm have a bit of trouble with my my 405. The power steering fluid is dripping everywhere and I'm not sure how to find the leak. Is there a place where it usually starts leaking from? do the hoses start to leak or could it be a seal? Ill give the engine bay a good spray with degreaser then see if i can find it but the fluid is kind of everywhere on the side of the motor where the pump is mounted. Sorry for the vague description.

In other good news, the rubber in my shifter links had worn out (maybe from all of the power steering fluid dripping all over them?). They looked like a similar size to the bushings I use skating so Codman and I tried pressing some in with a vice and it worked!
Skateboard bushing are made of urethane and come in many different compounds and durometers so its sweet they can fit straight in and replace the old rubber parts.

Good work indeed, necessity as they say and I love the improvisation, this adaptation will assist all. As for power steering on an Mi16, I am not there yet..

I have a couple of spare pumps here if you think it's at fault. The high pressure hose is another possibility. You're welcome to borrow a pump while you investigate further.

Perhaps before pulling things apart you may like top try replacing the P/S oil with LUCAS Power Steering Revival Fluid.
I have used this on various systems and it's amazing the leaks it will fix and gives a better feel to the steering.

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll go to town with degreaser tomorrow to try and clean the engine bay then take it for a drive then see if I can find out where this leak is coming from then I’ll try the revival fluid and or change some parts.

If anyone has worn out linkages and wants some free bushings I have some kicking about I think or I can point you to some skate shops that have some in stock :)

Another method is to lay a clean piece of paper under the car when you park it (I used to use large cardboard boxes) and check in the morning, just in case your leak is active when the engine isn't running.

Usually the top seal on the rack where the shaft goes in.

I have found the leak! (fingers crossed it’s this one spot). The hose the connects the pump to the rack has cracked and it’s leaking from there. Does anybody have a spare one to buy or know where to find one?

As I mentioned. Take the hose to a Pirtek dealer and they'll make up a new one using your fittings.
