I searched for original post but it’s been so long ago it appears to have been lost. A number of years ago I started making my own illuminated Renault losange sign. I made the centre part from scratch with some perplex, tape and leftover paint. Then welded up a steel frame and mounted it with some led lights off eBay.

At that point I put it in a box under the bench as the fabrication of the electrics and a sensor to run off 240V were beyond my electrical capabilities and whilst I didn’t forget about it, it became too hard so semi forgot about it.

Fast forward a few years, and ALDI had cheap sensor lights on sale the other week and I bought some for the side of the house. My brain started ticking, and I thought it might be possible to transfer the innards into the aforementioned sign. I’ll need to wait til it’s dark to see how it comes up. It won’t illuminate the whole sign the way the previous version would have due to the way the lights are mounted but space didn’t permit but hopefully it won’t look too bad. As I used a step light, there will be a feint light on when dark, then the brighter led when the sensor detects movement.

Love the motion sensitivity. It will feel alive :)

They’re all the same in the dark Barry, didn’t your mother tell you that?

In all seriousness, I’m looking at adding some 3.7v led strips to illuminate the sign more broadly. The solar panel and battery only pumps out 3.7v. The 12v strips I had in there originally seem to need about 8v min to glow. The main light from the ALDI light is too focussed as it is effectively glued to the face with silicon.

Here is the pilot glow and main light as best I can photograph in the dark.

I think I’ll try two strips - one top left side and the other on the opposite bottom right side.

You could probably try a bit of white paper behind the logo, in front of the light to act as a defuser.

It looks like the light is pretty strong so it might help not blow out the detail aaaaand, you might end up with an accidental rim halo on the wall.

The main light is siliconed onto the back of the Perspex. If I try to remove it now, I’ll probably ruin the graphics in the process.

My thought is to leave it there, temporarily wire in the led strips and if they work either cut the wires to the current main light for the LEDs or; add them in parallel.

Ah,
Yeah ok fair enough.

So, my low voltage LEDs arrived. The seller managed to get them from China to Sydney in 5 days. Australia Post managed to get them from Mascot to Chullora; to Penrith, then back to Plumpton in 4 weeks!

Quite pleased with the improvement - not perfect, but good. I could add another strip - they came as a pack of 5 but wife may not be impressed if I make it too bright. So I’ll leave it for now.

That's really good. I'd not mess with it. I imagine it still won't be going up on the front of the house? :)

That looks great, it has that old world charm.
