Hey all,

just thought I'd bring it to your attention that there is an Estafette van for sale in this months Unique Cars mag in the black and white section.

It seems to be the Tamworth dealer van - well thats what is signwritten on the side of it anyway. Looks like it would need some TLC but maybe not full restoration from the photo.

$1800 I recall and I dont have the phone number.

Just the thing for French Car days!

I saw that one too.

It was at an auction in Tamworth recently dad told me. The guy who has it now probably didn't pay much for it.

Nev Maunder used to service French Cars at the workshop on Goonoo Goonoo rd.
I'm amazed the sign writing on the van is still there.
Note, only 5 numbers in the telephone number! (pre 70's signwriting ???)

yeah that estafette has now been brought down to melbourne by its new owner ive heard. What running gear did they have in them ( was it based on a dauphine or something)

yeah, i remember seeing that van up at tamworth.

it was in goddard's agmuseum, being a tractor nut i was busy looking at john deere's, inters etc but remember it well and have it in the background of one of my photos. very interesting little beast and the same thoughts went through my mind- great promo vehicle but being citroen orientated i thought "pity it is'nt a h/hy van!"

good to hear it's been saved. we have a renault r30/42 tractor from the 1950's that has a side valve 4cyl in it, have been told it's the same engine as the estafette van used. possible, would'nt think they would have too many specialised tractor engines but then again, renault have built tractors since the late teens.

cheers
glenn.

The side valve motor in your tractor would the the same as in a Renault Prairie. The Estafette used a variation of the 750/Dauphine/R4 Ventoux three bearing motor on the early models, with the Sierra five bearing motor being used in the later models.

hi simon,

thanks for that bit of info, forgot about the prairie wagon. probably got the brochure on it at home in the archives so will have a look and compare them.

there are a few of those r 30/42 tractors on the mainland but we only had 2 sold here in tasmania. i think they were a bit narrow and high for our hills here plus the grey ferguson te was selling like hotcakes too. it's a neat little tractor, some of the later slightly bigger ones used perkins diesels but doubt if any of those got here.

note you are in adelaide, i'm going over in june to the mega toy and model swap on the queens birthday long weekend at the wayville showgrounds. will be selling a few models and will have a good assortment of renault and pug sales brochures for sale too if you want to drop by to see them (mainly late 1960's on stuff but some of the pugs go back to the 404's). was taking them to show another froggy orientated guy but they are fair game if anyone is interested.

cheers
glenn.

I've never actually seen an old Renault tractor in AUS, not even a modern one even though they were assembled in Sydney in the late '70's.

Pre-70s?

I think you'd have to go back a lot further than that... STD came in about 1970, didn't it? Six digit numbers were standardised well before that... IIRC

Speaking of Tractors - Does anybody want one - a Reno tractor that is.

I may know of one for sale. Its Yellow too!

Will get details tonight...

I'll be interested in a Tractor towards the end of the year.
Do these beasts have the standard 3 point linkage?
Smallish not more than 40HP?

Jayson Hinder had a low hour old Renault tractor ex Roy Munns. Petrol/Kero I think, orange...... a bit worse for wear for being stored outside... it wouldn't look out of place next to your R4 Simon.

I dunno if Jayson has flogged it in the last 18 months.

Gib Gib,

if you are talking interesting second hand and safe small tractors with equal sized wheels go Italian and get a Cararro,Goldoni, Valpadana or Ferrari. They are really hard to tip over and will
just about go anywhere. There seems to be a fair few of them in QLD. Try www.ihub.com.au

There is a fair chance that jpb and I are talking about the same Renault tractor, orange/yellow in ACT area..same/ same?

The Hinder tractor is a bit like a grey Fergie...
an accident waiting to happen. I guess I'm a bit paranoid about roll overs, but we are talking really a 1940's/50's bit of design. It does have 3pt linkage, but the whole shebang would need a thorough restoration.

Running it on kero would send you broke.

I need a tractor at some point and gave this one
some thought...but nuh.

cheers!

Thanks boggy.

Great site!
Looking at some generators now too...

I guess parts supply would be a big problem with the Reno tractor.
Only lookin to spend $1500 with slasher & ripper attachment & pref diesel.

Tractors!!

I've enjoyed this. I thought it was amazing when Renweave started that Peugeot bike stream, but tractors!!

Simon's knowledge, as ever, right up to the mark. I remember Renault Estafettes new, with a fabulous 6 feet headroom (they were feet then).

Is there not a small Renault caterpillar at the Birdwood Mill Museum or somewhere similar, alligator bonnet, ex Innaminka or somewhere similar, Simon??

these r 30/42 tractors are best kept as collector items these days. no reflection on their ability but petrol/kero fuel is very expensive to run plus you have magneto ignition, can be tricky getting someone who knows how to repair them at reasonable cost. very high tractor too so apt to tip over in hilly terrain. all that aside, they went fairly well really.

there are 2 renault crawlers here in australia i know of, one at the red hill museum in balmoral victoria, the other was in the rohrlach collection in tanunda south australia but since sold- believe it went to victoria to a guy who intended to export it but thankfully, got knocked back on a permit to do so. these crawlers looked like a 1920's renault car with their rear mounted radiator and coal scuttle bonnet.

a few more 1950's sift diesels got here and sold by brown and dureau in the 1950's. we have one of those as well, heck of a big 4cylinder diesel but was'nt quite in the class of a 50hp 3 cylinder deutz. poor old sifts got big heavy cast 30 inch rear wheels put on them and wound up twisting the rear axles so bad you could'nt get the shaft out- the whole housing had to come off.

i'd like an sfv or vierzon single cylinder diesel too but none got here. they were a frog copy of a lanz bulldog single cylinder hot bulb surface ignition blow lamp start. seeing these in books is as close as i'll get to owning one- that and my 1/16 model of one!

cheers
glenn.
