does anyone know the exact price of this car when it is sold in oz [next month i believe] in the uk it goes for 15995 gbp which could be around $36000 plus. as it is in competetion with the 206 gti which is around $30000 one would think it should be around that price too!!! any ideas?

Retail price (exc. ORC) is going to be $30,990, with delivery from May. Although a new model is due to be released in France in June (no mention when it comes to AUS), the price on that one is likely to increase if the AU$ doesn't improve though.

I can see the Clio ending up in the same boat as the 205 GTi when it was new. How many people are going to pay $30000 + dollars for a hot hatch nowadays? Not many I would suspect.

Any idea on how many Clio's Renault expect to drive off the show room floor per annum?

I reckon they should sell quite a few. At that price it sort of makes it similar to the last 205 GTi's sold in AUS many years ago. For the level of performance offered, it seems to offer quite good value.

A good magazine to look for at the moment is the UK EVO magazine, they have a performance comparison in their March 2001 issue comparing the HSV GTS, Clio 172, Clio V6 and WRX and Pug 306 GTi-6 among others. The Clio compares favourably to the HSV, being within points of seconds in terms of slalom and a dry circuit tests. And the UK spec HSV has a few extra GG's because of a modified air intake system. It seemed to be a most unbiased test, unlike any comparison with a HSV in an AUS magazine!

I agree, I recon they should lots, when you compare performance for price, its over 10 grand cheaper than a WRX and only half a second slower to 100. I think anyone wanting to get into club level motor sport would have to look at the Cleo, there is nothing else in the 2 litre class with that performance for the money.
David.

ditto the above...i hate to say it being a pug man thru and thru but this car could sell like hotcakes in oz. i have read every mag and website on this car, even talked to owners in uk....not a lot of bad things about this car..a few niggles but so what. a steal at the price! now if only the 2 litre came in the v6's body i'd be down to my nearest nissan dealer in a flash! the 172 sport comes so close to the v6 specs why spend another 20 or 30 grand???

Basically just wanted to go and have a good look at the cars, inparticular suss out the Clio Sport, the thing looks pretty impressive and from what I've heard sounds it too.

The words I heard were that the "interested customer" release is in some areas starts tonight. The TV adverts are starting on the 20th May, so I guess that is the official release date.

There is likely to be only 200 of the current shape Clio, each is numbered for exclusivity. The new revised model being released at the Sydney Motor Show.

Simon

TV adds sweet.

I'm keen on saving my money and having a good look at these clios. Quit spending money on the R17 tuck the money away in a safe place and go out and purchase one.
Oh yea.

Wont happen over night though.

Anyone definite on getting one ?

They'd be a great investment.

I'm going to a dealer launch tomorrow (Thursday) night so I'll let you all know what happens.
Talking to someone today who was driving to work and looked in the mirror and had a diamond staring at them, next thing a Senic RX4 passes them. So the 20th is when the TV adds start is it Simon? that was one question I had for tomorrow night.
Ashley, I'm coming up on Sat the 26th to get the car, wont have time for sight seeing thow, I have to be back in Melbourne Monday night
Seeya,
David.

reno17, i'm seriously looking at selling my 205 16v to get into a clio 172. i've done lots of homework on this car however i'm not convinced on the looks/nissan servicing yet. last nite i saw a web article on the NEW clio due to be released in june inthe uk..it appears to be a better car than the one were getting next week[complete revise] very strange though! they said there is a waiting list for the present clio in the uk. why would any company supersede a car thats selling in droves??? anybody ??

Hi guys, I went to the launch tonight, looks great, Renault boss Richard Wilson was there and told me TV adds will definatly start on Sunday 27th of May, not the 20th as Simon thought but the 27th, so keep the telly on, unfortunatly I'll be somewhere between Melbourne and Brisbane with no TV in sight. Tonight there was everyone from Renault directors down to spare parts salesmen and they so enthusiastic it was something I've never seen, the cars are great, the people are very keen and I can't see how they can fail. There were people signing up for cars on the spot, I was told they sold 20 cars tonight, so yeah, I'm excited.

David.

PS. I put my name down for a test drive of the Cleo.

Hmm, I can't remember when a dealer wasn't externally excited about the cars they sell. Even Peter Brock said a Lada was the Best Thing when he had to make a buck!

Mind you the RS Clio is far removed from a Lada!

I'm horrified to learn that Renaults will be sold and serviced thru Nissan dealers.

I have a Nissan and I've had nothing but trouble with their servicing (I've been through 3 dealers). jr is correct to be sceptical. My message to those of you contemplating purchasing a new Renault here is:

DO NOT SERVICE YOUR CAR WITH NISSAN!!!

I can't stress this point enough.

I've been contemplating a Clio but does anyone here know of any good Renault mechanics in Sydney?

Billtran,
I here what your saying about dealers, but there all the same, I have many customers who buy cars from Pug and Cit dealers and come straight to us with all kinds of horror stories. This is great for us and with new cars selling it gives us a future, as for Sydney, the most famous would most certainly be Colliers but there are others, I can't think of them but I see there adds in the car club mag, so if you want good advice for servicing the car club would know.
The reason I talk about the enthusiasm of Renault is because I've been to a few of these nights over the past 20 years and I've never seen the executive of a car importer come to us to talk to us and explain the product, by us, I mean the specialist, NOT the dealers, there was Ken from Carravelle, Paul from Auto Paris, Gary from Renno workshop and me from French Connection and it may have been an act, but they were trying to be as helpful and as friendly as possible, and as they said, if it wasn't for us supporting Renault over the past 20 years there job would be alot harder.

David.

Bill,

Colliers (at Granville?) would have to be the most expert Renault workshop in Sydney and they are nice guys too. Do you remember that Renault motorkhana special we saw in Wayne Griffith's workshop? That was owned and built by the Colliers. I've spoken to David Collier on the phone and he was very pleasant and helpful (in regards to my enquiry about Aliquant shock absorbers).

Bill, if you get a Renault, get the Colliers to service it. There is no substitute for servicing done by friendly and knowledgeable enthusiasts.

Dave
