This one used to have an auto which may have compounded the fault as the mounting points for the manual lever are not provided in the floor pan and have to be more less guessed, so it could be "not quite right".
The problem was 2nd gear selection that worked OK sometimes and not others. Close inspection showed that the lever ball was not held tight in its socket which allowed a VERY small amount of vertical movement. The wreckers found me another lever assembly with a nice tight "ball bit" which seems to have fixed the problem.
Civilised place - Reno Spares at Keilor. Seeing as I got all the bits for the job from them there was no charge for the replacement lever assembly - I didn't ask for a freebie it was offered !
