what does it tell us?

It tell's us the following:
R1151 - The car is a TS Manual
The fabrication No: is 408021 which in the TS 1151 series is a very late fabrication. This number can also be cross referenced in the parts manual to obtain correct specifications for you particular car.
The 761 means an Australian car.
The 6-76 is the manufacture date ie June 1976 so a 1976 model. New models begin in the Sept month for Renault so for eg a manufacture date of 10-76 would make it a 77 model.
The 2937371 is the Chassis No:
The 807 is the engine type - 16TS and the number 040011780 looks like it's the original engine for that period.

So all in all the numbers all appear correct and you have an original car!! which can be cross referenced to the PR Manual from 1977 to obtain your specifications. Hope this helps.

Thanks for joining. Numbers are building!!!

Thanks Zaccy. The S is a 5 (I think) making it Fab No: 57,567 which is a very early TS in Australia. Nice one, I don't think I know of an existing earlier one than that, so far. Is this the one that was for sale in Sydney recently (one owner)?

The Fab. number will be 87867, dating from November 1969.

Simon,

Interesting one I saw today for the register. R1151 Fab No: 38668. I'm calculating a manufacture date of October 1968. Given Launch date for TS in Aust was April 1969 - ???? My 69TS has a Fab No: 61453 and I was advised by original purchaser he bought it in May/June 1969. Possible 38668 an early import? Couldn't see any stenciling above R/H headlight and it did have the Dupont Alpine White sticker. Any Thoughts??

Thanks for letting me know that the s is a 5 - it looked like an s to me. Yes I purchased it from a chap on the lower north shore named Philip Went who bought it new (in 1969) and drove it to North Sydney everyday during his working life - he is a retired hydrologist, now aged 78. He volunteered that information so I don't think I am breaching any Privacy Act provisions.

What I really like about the car is that it engages you - new cars don't as they almost drive themselves. But I really hate the brakes and steering. I will fix them after I paint the car.

The Australian introduction of the 16TS was March 1969, so the car you mentioned, chassis number 2548769, would be a AUS first batch 16TS. There were no full import early 16TS sold in Australia. Your 16TS is more a June car than a May car.

Geckoeng 16TS !!

Hi Sarosa,

Yes I do have a R16TS, bought 2 months ago. Was originally brought over from the East about 9-12 months ago. Not sure of its history. Just that it is a very good base care to start a project with. It will not be a resto, but along the lines of a California Custom. I have just organised a 16TX box for it in the UK. It will have minor body change, upgraded suspension and lowered (hence the questions to Simon) 2 tone paint, with all the bling polished up. It came with 14" Dunlops. Interior will be completely updated. I have just taken a lot of stuff off of a 20TS, including a very nice small air con unit. Was an Auto. Need front and rear window rubber stainless trim.

Oval 1154 9643
Diamond 7061393

Not able to see the Oz plate as it has immobilizer and car alarm in the way. Is repainted (long time ago) in very light grey. Is not registered at present. Will sit till Dauphine is very well on its way. Instruments are Jaeger, so a KPH speedo required.

I will enjoy !!!!
Thanks, Ray

Liked the story, I appreciate a car that may need a respray but is still kept in a good drivable condition and in regular use. I think they have there own charm. I don't believe they should look better than show room perfect. It is better that they are regularly used. As I have mentioned before there are several car clubs that will not allow cars on their runs that have been restored. Only normal repairs are permitted. For example you can cut out a rusty section and repaint the replaced bit but that is all. They try and keep the cars as they would have been, just kept in roadworthy condition. Some of their cars have almost as much surface rust as paint. They also use gravel roads when ever possible and go to small townships that might be considered "off the beaten track". They believe cars are to be used, but not abused.

Thanks Col, great to have a detailed story. Interestingly we have another 69TS on the register just 20 cars before yours, 67,687.

So far we have:

3 R1150's (Renault 16, 1470cc)
15 R1151's (TS, Manual)
3 R1152's (TL, Manual)
1 R1153 (TL, Automatic)(Havn't confirmed)
5 R1154's (TS, Automatic)
1 R1156 (TX, Manual)
-----
28

Plus waiting for another 7 cars confirmed but need to send in their numbers + following up another 5.:)

I'll send out an email with all the registrants on soon (When I get the next 7) listing all the cars, numbers and contact's etc and put the list in here (AF) if I get the owners permission.

G'day Sarosa

Is the earlier car still roadworthy? It would be interesting to find the earliest 16TS still on the road in Oz.

As an aside, while the TS seems to have been the biggest seller in Australia, I get the impression that the 16/16L/16GL series were more popular overseas, although I can't find any statistics to back it up. ....Simon? :)

Earlier car, 67.687 is a complete goer but unregistered. The earliest TS is Australia I have recorded is Mike Neil's Alpine White 38,668. The latest TS I have recorded is Restore-a-16TS's (Chris) GhostGum at 408,021. Earliest Australian R1150 is so far Tony's (Melc) Valley Green one mentioned above. My R1150 (Reg: JZA931) is earlier (1968) but was an import.

Your right about TS sales in Australia compared to world preference for GL/L/TL. Biggest seller worldwide in the R16 range was:
1. R1152 (TL Manual) with 630,000+
2. R1150 (DL/GL(S)) with 551,000+
3. R1151 (TS Manual) with 398,000+
4 R1156 (TX) with 153,000+
5. R1153 (TL Auto) with 44,000+
6. R1154 (TS Auto)with 33,000+

Noting, the R1152 was available from 1968 to 1980 and the TS was stopped in earlier 1977. (Stats from R16site)

My R1150 (Reg: JZA931) is earlier (1968) but was an import.

Hardly just an import. The import of JZA 931 as one of the Renault Australia evaluation 16s would make it the most interesting surviving 16 in Australia.

Another TL!

Prompted by Sarosa I have the following information for my 1974 TL manual I have that was knocked back on rego last year for some minor rust issues!

Oval plate
Model: 1152
Fabrication No: 399026
Diamond plate
Chassis No. 9474026
Transmission: 4 speed
Year: 1974
Colour: Ghost Gum 566
Owner: me
Status: unregistered
Condition: moderate.
Previous owner Mornington Peninsula 2 years, then "an old lady" in Melbourne. 64000 odd K's on odometer, possibly and quite probably correct. Sat in yard for considerablt period apparently.

Hi guys,

I'm new to Renault ownership having stumbled on a 2003 Clio as a 'temporary cheap car', that still had some character, but driving it puts more of a smile on my face than anything I've driven in the past. Always had a soft spot for the R10, and 16. They just looked so different to anything else.

But one question from reading this, what's 'Electrophoresis'? I'm guessing by the other comments it's some revolutionary feature designed to prevent something, but caused them to rust?

Daniel
