Record MaxiGaz Shock Absorbers on 205 Gti?

Hi All, looking to replace the front shocks on a 205gti.
I've read many places online about Bilstein B4s as a replacement for original Peugeot items, but think ill need to ship them in from OS.

Alternatively Ive found that EAI stock something called Record MaxiGaz. (french) $260 a pair.

Interested if any have had experience (good or bad)with these?

Cheers

Don't touch the B4s, I've found not enough rebound resistance and wore a set out on a 405 very quickly. Others that I have inherited with cars were usually leaking or way too soft. Records are excellent on my 504 so would be worth getting I think.
What's wrong with the originals? Except for the specialised MCAs on my rally 309, originals are all I use on my FWD cars these days.

Thanks Graham.

Thats interesting to hear. Its currently got what i believe to be the original Aliquant shock on the Passenger side and has had the drivers side replaced at some point with a different unit. (not sure of brand) Im not sure if the passenger Aliquant unit is OK or not but the hub carrier is coted in a dried thick oily scunge which makes me think the shock has leaked considerably at some point? Im a complete novice on all this so am just thinking that at 230k ks and 33 years in existence it may have run its life?

Alinquants would be replacement original are made by Peugeot

I'll take a photo of an original, I think a lot of people think they have originals when they don't. Probably why they need replacing! Original have "Peugeot Bart" stamped on them

Couldn't find one with Bart on it (Bart is where the Peugeot shocker factory is located, may have gone now? Peugeot strut.jpg) but pretty sure this is OE.

Thanks Graham. Seems I too got it the wrong way around! I then have the original on the drivers side and replacement on the PS. both sides assemblies are a mess at the moment, top mounts, bump stops, everything turned to dust... My novice opinion thinks that the whole assembly can be renewed with shock, top mount bearings and rubber, bump stops and dust covers. Are there any other times that generally require replacing i have left out? (springs are ok and ive done the wishbones, droplinks etc.) Think i may just give the Records a go and see what happens.

Yes, replace everything. Use Series 2 405 top mounts, they work very well on the 205s. Note that you will have a metal component leftover if you use these. Less than $20 each at EAI.

Just do the rubbers and if the bearing is toast replace that. Usually a 10/15$ part per side. Replace your bottom ball joint pinch bolt also as they tend to stretch over the years. If you have a knock its going to be the droplinks which are cheap to replace while its all apart.

There are original Pug 205 dampers around. Pm me if you want a contact.
