Hi Froggers, I know it’s been a while since I gave an update on the R8 project. It is getting closer to RWC and Club permit ,or at least that was the plan until today. Not wishing to go through the heartache of fitting the chrome trims whilst installing my windscreens I visited my local windscreen place only to be told that my windscreen is toughened not laminated and as such they can’t legally fit it. Pity as it’s perfectly roadworthy. What are other 8/10 owners using..laminated or toughened? Of course I could just do it myself..done R8 windscreens before but always deleted the trims. The other option is to find a laminated one ...any thoughts?

My R8 has a laminated screen, the first of them fitted in 1975 and a new one 3 years ago.

I don't know about availability though. Last time I looked, Pilkingtons were moving from UK to Finland and I don't know whether things are running again.

I'd never fit a toughened screen. You'd have to get a secondhand one. I know of one in Adelaide but have no idea of its condition or whether it has been thrown away yet.

Yes John, I agree a roadworthy secondhand one may be the only option

Do you want me to chase the Adelaide one? I guess at least I'll see whether it has yet been thrown away and let you know on this thread. I don't know the owner, just know she's been asking whether anyone might want it.

Hi Brian
I purchased a laminated windscreen around 5 years ago from Ralph Moore Glass (NSW), so maybe give them a try. They ship every where and specialise in old ca glass. I recall it cost around $800 delivered (to a factory in Knox?) http://ralphmooreautoglass.com.au/
When you say they would not fit the toughened glass, I am curious because that is they way they came from the factory? Its a bit like seat belts, in 1960's they were not ADR, so not compulsory, and I thought theoretically (although not wise) you don't have to have seat belts?
So if they came with toughened glass from the factory, why can't they be fitted and RWC with them?
Maybe someone knows the answer?
Angelo

Hi Angelo,
I think it is a liability issue with them fitting a front windscreen..no problems fitting the rear. I”ll do some chasing around for a new one and then pursue the used option.
Regarding seat belts,a mate runs the Holden museum at Trafalgar and when I questioned him about the lack of belts in some of his cars he quoted the same response.

If it is no trouble John, in the meantime I will do some searching for a new one

I have two laminated screens in my cars. The first was ordered through OBriens. The second came from Ralph Moore. Come to think of it, I may have got two from him over the years.

I've no idea re RWC with a toughened screen, but my new screen also came from Ralph Moore.

I will do some phoning...

Ralph Moore gets the old Renault screens in from Pilkingtons, who finished moving the classic section to Finland maybe a year ago. I had been waiting for a Dauphine windscreen at the time for over a year.

I got a lamintaed one last year for my A110 from GBS Alpine...but it was about $1300 landed (but took less than a week)...the transport was the big cost (almost 2x windscreen cost).....but you get that.

Apart from the weight, just think of the packaging necessary for a single screen despatch!

I purchased a laminated windscreen from O’Brien’s Bankstown, as I am insured through Shannons that’s where I was told to go: they told me it was supplied through Ralph Moore, apparenty they supply but don’t sell direct or install
hope that helps: I have purchased and had win supplied y ralph Moore a couple of times before for R10’s

I've passed on the request - particularly asking my friend to go and look at the condition of the screen. I'll let you know in time. There are two just up the road in Perth but both are marked with windscreen wiper scrape marks so I presume you wouldn't want them.

Personally, I'd put the marked ones to the hammer and drop them in the bin....

The Dauphine G is also insured with Shannon’s, so had to go through OBriens. The branch I went to had no idea where to find the screen. I told them to call Ralph Moore who brought them from Pilkington. Hopefully Pilkingtons made a few when they made the one for us. I think the Dauphine screen was around $800. Pre 1980 Renault screens have been getting more difficult to find for a while now.
Some years ago my father in-law needed a laminated screen for his R8G that he had at the time. It also came through Ralph Moore, but it was already in stock and did not have to be ordered.
