Just trying to sort a gear shift issue i have in the R8 4 speed.

What is the neutral (or at rest) position of the gear stick, is it between 1-2, or 3-4?

I think Is is pulled to,one side with a spring that I don’t have any more.

thanks

From memory, while I sit watching the tennis (too late to actually jump in a car to check) its between 1-2, so that R is easy to find.

I concur - 1-2 And yes, there is a spring to on the coupling to pull it in to the 1-2 plane

Thanks. Just I’ve set up a new short shift arrangement and set up the neutral bias btw 1-2. But I find by quick shifting from 3rd to 4th , I slip accidentally into 2nd, which I would find disconcerting at 120km/h!

I was thinking of changing the spring to pull the at rest position to btw 3-4?

I’ll give it a go tomorrow and see how it drives.

not sure

I think the R12 once had a spring that centralised neutral in the 1 & 2 plane, but its not there, I never have any problems selecting gears and find that not having the spring is not a problem.

Try having a drive without the spring and see how it feels or you need a slightly weaker spring.

Nice work by the way (y).

My older sister was my first driving instructor when I was a teen - and she taught me in her R10. The first lesson was not hold the gear leaver from the top but to rotate your hand a full 90 deg, holding it against the first second gate and flip it over to hold it against the third fourth gate - never miss a shift and does make the spring a bit redundant (but it does help nonetheless).

I’ll try removing or using a softer spring, and see how that feels.

Yes shifting the r8/10 is a little different than your normal front gbox car and I have found in the past a smaller and lighter gear knob helps enormously with the feel and ‘finding’ the right gear.

sorry I meant shifting up from 3rd to 4th, it sometimes goes into second

Do you have any over rev protection, spark or injection cut out for your issue?
May save an engine or box

Unfortunately that won't save your engine from a missed gear change from 3rd to 4th and accidently getting 2nd, the only way is to get the clutch disengaged quickly and shift up.

Yes, cut out at rev limited to 7500, but as Col say won’t save the gbox.

Well I think I have got a solution. I’ve backed off the 1-2 spring so it’s not so tight and fitted a shorter spring on the 3-4 side so it kind of balances itself.
I fitted a slightly longer shifter so there is more ‘feel’ but I think I need to come up with a gate or at least one that keeps 3-4 shift on a straight line when sliding 3-4-3 etc.
shift 1-2-1, 2-3-2 is very quick and accurate.
Task for another day, but happy with the outcome.

Time to get some new toys from MME Motor sport
To prevent going into the 1-2 plane at high revs adapt one of these

Always found 3rd/4th plane the safest, Std R8 is 1/2, not a great idea if you are in the heat of battle. I would recommend a lock out for reverse as its easy to defeat the detent and end up with lots of noise. I've actually seen the 3/4 hub outer reverse gear broken, due to this manoeuvre (not by me )
The lock needs to be something quick to disengage if you need to find reverse in a hurry, like you are pointing the wrong way to everybody else.
When you are competing, it's always possible to do things you never do on the road.

Ask Frans what he does...

I'm sans spring there - never had one that I remember in the R8. Never had a problem but don't compete so 'When you are competing, it's always possible....' doesn't apply I guess. Interesting discussion!!
