Saw a 1980 R18 GTS in the local wreckers the other day and was interested in getting the gearbox from the car. On the badge on the boot, it has '5 Vitesses' which, to my very limited French, means 5 speed. However, the gear knob, which appears to be the original, is for a 4 speed.

I thought all Aussie R18s had 5 speed boxes. Does anybody know if there were any 4 speed R18s sold here.

Unfortunately, the wheels are off the car and it's sitting on dirt so I can't get underneath to see the type number plate on the unit and the gear lever isn't connected to the box. It's also in a place where it's difficult to lift with their crane (it's surrounded by Volvos, guess they can drive their crane over the top of them, no one is likely to want Volvo parts)

cheers!

I once helped a mate remove a 5 speed gearbox from a R18 at "Pick a Part" in Melbourne. I think about 4 years ago...

My mate was not after the box, but the clutch components.

So we stashed the box in the boot of something completely different (Hillman/Austin?) in case we wanted to come back for it later (which we never did)

I know they came in a 3 speed automatic. So does "5 vitesses" mean 5 speed?

Duh, well stuff me. I always thought it was some sort of equivalency factor, an 18GTS being the equivalent of five Triumph Vitesse's!

Ren Tin Tin,
I have a clean, reconditioned 18, 5 speed box(395 Type) in my shed that I will joyfully sell you for $280, which I am sure is less than the buy price from the wrecker plus 5l of degreaser and $140+ worth of parts to make it right. I am atttempting to clean out my shed!!
Alan.

Alan, I thought yours was already spoken for. The wrecker where this R18 is at is not a specialist French wrecker but mainly a Holden/ Ford/ Jap place. He does get Renaults (and other French cars) on a reasonably regular basis.
No, the wrecker doesn't want $280 more like $100 - $120 but it's in unknown condition and a bit of a gamble. The motor's knackered (it's in pieces in the boot) but the body and interior was in pretty good condition (no obvious rust or accident damage) so it looks like the car was written off because the owner couldn't be bothered fixing the motor.
cheers!

hey Tin Tin is this Parkridge Wreckers by any chance ?

I was there a couple of weeks ago and they had a 18 wagon down the back, and a Fuego.

The R17 they had there has dissapered.

Reno17,

No it's not Parkridge. The one I use is a little guy about 5 klicks from home (which is totally meaningless to everyone because you don't know where I live).
:D
The wrecker often gets Froggymobiles in his yeard but tend to crush them real quick. A JB Camira or Mazda 323 can sit in his yard for 2 yearrs but a Renault, Peugeot etc. will get crushed in 2 weeks.

Ren
cheers!

G'day Ren,
Unfortunately I have had no promises,or money in my hand for my g/box. It still awaits its' new owner.
Alan.

Alan,

As tempting as it is, I'm afraid I have to abandon any plans of a five speed gearbox at the moment due to some spouse induced poverty, ( you know the kind, 'you're not spending any more money on that shitbox')

REN
cheers!

Damien,

I thought of that too but, at the risk of being accused of being sexist, there are some things for which women are still usefull. (Who would do my washing?). Mrs. Tin Tin is ahead on usefullness at the moment but the situation will be reviewed regularly.
I wouldn't think the R10 is much of a 'chick magnet' so you're not likely to be plagued interfearing womenfolk for a while.

Ren.
cheers!
