Hey there,

I am trying to convince my brother to make his 12 look like a gordini- i.e the whitestripes etc.. are there any other (exterior differences) that would make it look more like one? Perhaps Mr Cavanagh could help out here?

He is gonna (finally) put the 1565cc motor from my 17 into it- he is going to take over where I left off- so it should have about 100+ odd hp in a 12- interesting me thinks.......

Cheers Ben

ps perhaps someone has some good quality pics of one (12 gordini) or a site they could recommend?

Hmm, there are a few external differences, a good one is the fuel filler location - moved from rear, to side fill.

Effect could be simulated by obtaining a R12 Wagon tank and fitting it.

Mind you, you wouldn't get the capacity of the genuine article - I believe about 80 litres?

As for performance, jump in a R17TS/Gordini and have a drive. Essentially an R12G in fancy clothes :)

Don't forget to block the rear fuel filler at the same time as fitting the side tank filler or your cover will be blown!

Also there is the front air scoop, but leave that off and say it is a very early 12G sans scoop. Bumpers could be left on, as they were included in the TL trim package for the 12G which included proper seats, vinyl door trims, floor coverings and bumpers. Otherwise you would have to fabricate the front bumper rubber buffers.

With the 17TL motor, assuming it is stock, you will have to pop the bonnet slightly, or remove the carby hotspot, otherwise the carby will dent the bonnet. One other solution, just pop twin sidedraft Webers/Dellorto's on there, then you get a reasonable aural impression of a 12G too.

There are two excellent sites for 12G's

<a href="http://gorde.free.fr/" target="_blank">http://gorde.free.fr/</a>

This site is dedicated to 12G's, and has plenty of good info and nice pics.

<a href="http://netti.nic.fi/~gordini/index.php" target="_blank">http://netti.nic.fi/~gordini/index.php</a>

The above site is dedicated to all Gordini's but head to the database section and there is a listing of 12G specific body parts as well as sales catalogue with nice pics.

Hey Simon that first site is awesome

Thought I had found all the sites on Gordini's but obviously not.

Thanks for that Simon- and everyone else- I hadn't run into those sites before - some awesome 12's there, particularly the old rally pics- with a 12 setup for tarmac rallying!

Yeah he is gonna add sidedraughts to it so the bulge won't be a problem- Not sure if he'll alter the fuel filler tho' depends how keen I get him on the idea I guess.

Cheers Ben

ps Stuey- what is Daves website addy?

French Connection website:

Ben, definatly 12G replica is the best thing to do to a 12, make it look the part and leave the bumpers off, they really look shocking with bumpers (worse than a standard 12), must be the stripes that makes them look od with bumpers. As for performance, Europa comparses them with the 17G, well you know the difference between the 17TL and the 17G, well add that again to get the 12G. As you all know by now I drive both and the 17G is a great everday car, good performance, handling ect. But the 12G, everytime I get in it I can't beleive the performance/handling and the brakes, I have never ever seen anything that stops like it, if fact the best discription of them I can use would be dangerous, I've never driven a car that will lock the wheels with such light pressure, obviously ment to be driven flat out into a corner, jump on the brakes at the last minute and expect super sticky tyres to do the rest but on the streets it dangerous.
Anyway I think there is some good pictures of my car on the web site so go for it.
David.

Of course, Dave is right, I was being a bit simplistic with the comparison to a 17G - the 12G definately has more HP, and is closer to a "raw" racing feel.

I guess if you were to build up a 12G for daily use, you'd probably want to tone it down closer to the 17G experience, if only to keep your sanity!

But if it's not for daily use, go for it! :D

David,

Just wondering with your 12G brakes, what pads are you running? I've got a similar problem with locking front brakes on the 8 with servoed brakes in extreme braking. My thoughts are because I'm running standard pads suited for non servoed 8/10's and that the pads themselves may infact be too soft leading to premature locking. The proper 17G/12G pads may be a different formulation to suit the four wheel discs and extra boosting, rather than the common solution of running "normal" 12 pads all round.

Good theory Simon,
To be honest I can't remember what pads the 12G's running at the moment, I've tried a few and no difference. The 17G is running the standard road house brand that Ken brings in (cause there cheap) and I don't have a problem with that. The 12G is overboosted I think. The booster is nearly twice the size of the 17G and the brakes feel a bit like the old falcon brakes of the 70's that you only touched and they lock up (not that bad, but along those lines). A mate of mine fitted a 17G booster to his 12G just so he could live with it to use every day, he is now restoring it and is very reluctent to put the original back in.

David.

Don't be reluctant to use the original one if the 17G one is preferred. The 17G booster was fitted to the later 12G's, so it would theoretically be a factory enhancement to the earlier cars. If the owner decides to use it for competition with hard pads later on, the original booster could be reinstated.
