My 505 used to have a nasty banging noise in the front suspension that came and went of its own accord.
It was the rubber boot on top of the shocker - which looked OK until you poked it. There is a big steel washer buried in the rubber which plays merry hell with the spring and turret and anything else that gets in the way as it bounces around in and out of the coils. I filled mine with silastic which settled it down nicely.
Before the $2 fix I replaced every bush in the front end plus the tie rod ends. AND, the shocks were rebuilt by a local place that was too tired to tell me that the boots were buggered !!!
