Hi,

I have a 404 from -69 with XC7 engine.

For different reasons I changed carb, and suspect that the jets all way of, might be that the carb comes from a 304 or 204 with smaller engine.

So I'm looking for standard values of the jets for a Solex 32 PBICA for my 404, 1.6 XC7 engine with 73hp.

Also, what is the difference between PBICA 32 and 34? Seems like all parts ar interchangeable?

Thanks in advance.

34 or 32 Solex?

My sometimes un reliable memory tells me that the 32 mm Solex was used on the 1468cc 403 motor and the 34mm was for the 1618cc 404 engine..

The differences between the two would be the throat size, venturi and certain jets

Bon chance

John

Thanks John.

I found this picture, might help somebody in the future:

Seems that I have a 32 mm Solex which I need to adjust to run on my 404.
I'll have the values above as base and go from there.

This is an XC7, which wasn't sold here, so it may have used a 32 pbic? It was detuned from the XC6. Here the 32 was used in the XC (3 bearing) and the early 5 bearing, XC5, motors. My car had a late XC5 which has a 34 pbic. I have converted to XC6 specs so it was good I could use the same carby. Most workshop manuals have an exploded diagram of the carby.

jets ?!

Thanks John.

Do you know what capacity your 404 engine is? Is it 1468cc or 1618cc?
Those jet values look about right for a 1468cc motor... the 1618 cc motor had some departures like venturi and main jets.
The 1618cc carburetor specification for a 34 PBICA shows
choke tube 26
mainjet 137
air correction 170
slow running fuel 45
slow running air 210
starter fuel jet110
starter air jet6.5
emulsion tube 28
pump jet 50 float 5.7gr
needle valve 170

I hope this helps for comparison purposes
(Also note from Scientific Publications manual that the 32 PBCA was used prior to 1965)

32 pbca jets

Just found jets specification for a 32 PBCA ...as used on XC/73hp
choke tube 25
main jet 130
air correction 170
slow running fuel 50
slow running air 220
starter fuel jet110
starter air jet6.5
emulsion tube 19
pump jet 50
float 5.7gr
needle valve 170

The XC7 engines were very torquey, possibly due to the smaller 25 mm choke tube.

Thanks for the info John.

I assumed my XC7 engine came with 34 PBICA (but not sure). The car is a 1969, 5 bearing engine and 1618cc.

One way would be to change to a "standard" 34 PBICA, but I don't have that. I have a 32 PBICA which I now need to tune to run on this engine. Should be possible right?
I have a 34 PBICA for spare parts.

Carburators is a whole new world for me, but learning alot :)

After fixing some air leaks the car runs quite well now through the gears and att higher speeds, but is lumping when driving at low speeds. I suspect I need to go from 45 to 50 on slow running fuel jet.

Some pics of the car just because :)

Hi guys I'm getting this carburetor from a friend for my 404 and as you can see from the pic, the air correction jet is missing, I'm not sure of the size of this jet on these types carburetors, I'm used to the more common 34 PBICA, this one is known as the 34 BICSA. Can you please help with the jet size. I also need to know what that big screw on the side is for, the ordinary solex carbs only have two adjustment screws(air/fuel mixture screw and idling screw) this one has those plus this extra big one, what is it for and how do I tune it? Thanx.

No 404's used this carb pictured. This one has a choke butterfly. See Bahay's post for jetting etc.
Adjusting...Screw out idle adjuster 2 turns from fully in. Idle mix adjust.. screw out until idle falters. screw back in until idle falters again.. Screw out until idle evens out. Adjust idle adjuster for correct idle speed. Phew !!
