Hi all. I am looking to purchase a 4007 for my wife. I know they are basically an outlander but in my experience with common rail diesels I have a lot of faith in Peugeot and the 4007 would suit our needs well.
A bloke I know told me to stay away as automatic gearbox problems aren't uncommon and can cost around $15 000 to repair. This seems extreme?? Wondering if it could possibly be true?
My father called a Peugeot mechanic in QLD who says they are an Aisin/warner gearbox and are brilliant. While researching the gearbox I then find they are in fact a German made Getrag gearbox.
Can anyone shed any light on the automatic gearboxs in the 4007?
Cheers, Mick

The automatic transmission we love to disparage is a 4 speed torque converter unit, made in France.

You can read a dealer blurb about the 4007 (a Japanese vehicle with a French engine) transmissions at http://www.peugeot-allanmackayautos.com.au/media/deliacms/media/5/581-e52abc.pdf.

There is a thread in this forum complaining about high Peugeot dealer pricing of the fluid at service time. There are usually other sources.

Peugeot HDI 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder diesels are first rate units. There is a new version every few years, driven by changing Euro codes.

The 4007 came in two trim levels: ST and SV.

The ST came with an option of 6sp Aisin manual or Getrag 6sp DCS auto and the SV only came with the Getrag 6sp DSC auto 'box.

I would imagine the "fancy" DCS 'box is the expensive one quoted by the bloke you know. I believe it uses an even more rarefied gearbox oil than an Aisin auto 'box.

Press release by Peugeot Australia in 2009:

4007 features Peugeot's first Dual Clutch gearbox

The Peugeot 4007 not only features a brand new engine to Australia, but it also arrives with Peugeot’s first Dual Clutch System gearbox.

The 4007’s 6-speed DCS automatic, developed by renowned gearbox specialist Getrag, perfectly complements the smooth driving characteristics of the 2.2-litre diesel engine

A 6-speed Aisin manual gearbox is also available on ST trim.

A versatile gearbox, the DCS can be managed in two ways: in automatic mode with two operating programmes (Drive or Sport) or in semi-automatic mode (sequential) by using the gear selection paddles located behind the steering wheel.

The DCS effectively automates the gear changes on a manual gearbox and uses two clutches to transmit the engine torque.

The first clutch is located on the even-numbered gears and the second clutch is fitted to the odd-numbered gears. A fine-tuned electronic management system anticipates the gear changes and hydraulically operates one of the two clutches, which operate in parallel, without a torque converter. As such, one shaft is always connected and changing from one gear to another takes place in just a few tenths of a second, resulting in exceptionally smooth driving. Gear changing is quick and smooth and there is no interruption in torque.

In short, the Dual Clutch System ensures smooth driving without a clutch pedal while retaining all the dynamism and efficiency of a car equipped with a manual gearbox.

The semi-automatic gearbox chosen for the 4007 is equipped with six speeds to make best use of the performance from the 2.2-litre HDi FAP 115 kW diesel engine.

In the same logic, the choice of wet clutch technology has been favoured to transmit the generous amount of torque produced by this engine (380 Nm at 2000 rpm).

The 6-speed DCS also has the advantage of an adaptation program for slopes. The computer (ECU) authorises engine braking power according to the contours of the road to augment smooth driving, while Hill Start Assistance is also fitted.

This system, which is derived from the vehicle’s ESP, automatically slows the car for approximately two seconds to assist the vehicle in pulling away.

Dual Clutch System technology plays an important part in ensuring that Peugeot’s emphasis on fuel efficiency and emissions reduction continues with the 4007 – the automatic-type gearbox offering readings more akin to those of a manual vehicle.

Thanks for the replies. Does anyone have any experience with reliability of the box?

Sorry, that should have read 6sp manual or 6sp Getrag DCS on the ST trim, or 6sp Getrag DCS (dual clutch auto) only on the SV.

No worries Simon cheers. Armidillo, its the auto box im looking to buy so im looking for reliability feedback, good or bad. Its probably in other peugeots now aswell?

That box was only in the 4007, unfortunately, so there is no other Pugs or Cits to gain experience from.

Citroën had an equivalent - the C-Crosser - but I don’t think it was imported to Australia.

My mum's recently bought a manual 4007. Mainly to tow her camper trailer. Honestly Its an awful car. The rides terrible the seats are worse than park benches and It drives like a jap car. No character at all. Her car is the reason I've been continuing to tow with my clapped out old 406. If it does tick all your boxes drive it down a country road before you purchase, see how you like it.

The Getrag gear box oil is only expensive if you buy it from Peugeot. I had a post on several years ago about this cant remember when -- probably around 2012/13 got the original oil from Auto Barn ( I think) - yes I did have issues with the transmission its the same transmission as in the Lancer EVO.
