Peugeot 308 Engine Fault:Repair required message

I have a 2011 Peugeot 308 which has done about 70K and have the timing chain and water pump replaced couple of years ago under warranty.My car does only short runs of 15 minutes max per trip.

Of late the Engine Fault repair required message has started appearing.The first time it happened I took it to a Peugeot specialist and they could not find out what caused it.After few weeks it appeared again.Since the engine was running smoothly and petrol consumption was within in normal limits,I ignored it.The fault disappeared after driving it around for about 30 minutes.Today it came back on again but disappeared after a 30 minutes drive.But this time around while starting the engine light takes a bit longer to go off.It goes off only after the engine has run for about 30 secs.Any idea what could be causing it?
 
The timing chain and water pump issues suggest a 1.6 turbo petrol EP6DT.

You should get the an OBD error code with that message, which will help diagnosis. At the km travelled and trip history, and perhaps oil specification, you might place a bet on the need for an inlet valve clean, but that is speculative without any idea of the codes, if any.

If it is the inlets, then it will only get worse, leading to extreme loss of power and limp-home. This is a problem with all direct injected engines, which have become common. The oxygen/fuel ratio is disturbed beyond the computers's ability to cope.

On the bright side, it might only be a failing spark plug coil - no biggie. Test these by swapping them aout and watching if the code shifts. Codes please.
 
Battery failing? Drop in voltage when starting the engine could be sending the computer loopy.
 
The drive to mechanic is little over half hour so the error message disappears by the time I get there.So I have not been able to get an error code for the fault.

That seems like a good possibility.I have got a dashcam installed which I leave on while parking.There is a device that trips the power to dashcam once the voltage reaches 11.6V.This could have weakened the battery.It is possible that the 30 minute drive recharges the battery fully and the fault goes off.I think I need to get the battery charge checked next time it happens?
 
How old is the battery? If it's original, then it has now reached old age and may well be failing. 7 years is a typical life. An auto electrician can help with this.

The car computers run always, so they load the battery a little. Economy Mode comes in to shut out accessories (radio, etc) when the engine is stopped to keep the battery load down.

The computer saves error codes, so they will survive the trip. Currently active ones can be read with any generic reader. Historic ones can be read with Diagbox, which a specialist mechanic will have.
 
Thanks Seasink, the battery is about 3 years old.It is due for service in December so should be possible to see what the error code was then?A carbon clean was done while the timing chain was replaced about 3 years ago,so ruling out the intake valve build up possibility
