Oil pump R16

Have the sump of my 1970 R16 TS off as it needs a new gasket. Have noticed comments about primming the oil pump before starting the engine. If I need to do this what is the best way. I have seen advice about pouring oil down the filter pipe and turning the engine over by hand. Would this work ?

All I do is put some oil down into the pump before putting on the oil filter. Oil pump primes up quickly this way and you get oil pressure quickly.
