New Peugeot 308 is back!

They could use 310, 312, 313, 314 315 and so on and so forth. But then the 'zero' sounds better as in alphabet 'o' 3 o 8. 2 o 8

The central 0 is a registered trademark, since 1929.

Peugeot made Porsche change the 901 to the 911 but had no influence on Bristol who made a 400 series. Or further east where the Poles produced a rebodied Pobeida as the Warsawa 203, or Moskvich who ran through all the 400 numbers. Although Lada did begin their numbering sequence at 2101, perhaps mindful of exports, rather less convenient than 201.
It is possible to recycle previous model names and nobody notices. Like the Studebaker Landcruiser and the MG Magna. Of course different names have different connotations in different countries. Nissan thought Cedric a fine upmarket English name. And a Japanese company had to be dissuaded by their Australian executives from naming their model the Centaur.
Numbers can be patented - Zetor had to change the model designation of the 4711 to 4712 when they were sued by a perfume company.
