Hi all,

I recently bought a '70 404 wagon. It came with some roof racks in the boot that I am touching up and going to install. Thing is I am not sure what screw/bolt to use to screw them on. Is it imperial or metric? Is it a specific bolt or can I use any bolt from the hardware store. In general where do I look for 404 parts please? I am in Sydney.

Thankyou in advance

The holes are 8mm diameter 1.25mm pitch.

Originally the bolts were in Brass

I would replace them with stainless steel bolts to avoid corrosion issues.

Thanks @robmac much appreciated.

While you are at it it is worth getting a set of the brass grub screws used to blank off the holes when rack not fitted, which are blind ended and which can fill with crud, which is a pain when wanting to re-fit ( at least if one washes the car as infrequently as I do )

You may elect to only fit the rack when using it. They are an excellent roof rack but are noisy and increase fuel consumption at highway speeds. Have been mulling over ways to stop the bars vibrating and making this noise, but haven't yet found an acceptable solution.

There are a variety of locals specialising in peugeot, I don't know the NSW scene well, although IanRobbo on this forum is good. EUropean Auto Imports have a dwindling stock of some new items.

One can get just about anything overseas ( need to watch quality of some after market stuff and batch buy to save on freight) Main overseas ones are Der Franzose, near Bremen in Germany, Série04 in France, also L'Aventure Francaise, which is a factory backed one which has started remanufacturing stuff with original tooling etc ( e.g. rear Crown wheels )

Congratulations on the purchase. You will have a lot of fun

Best Wishes

Andrew

I had one of these roof-racks on my 404 sedan - many many years ago.

I recall that I put rubber washers under the feet - to protect the paintwork. I don't though recall if it helped with vibration (in fact I wouldn't know, as I always had the rubber washers there, so have no "non-washer" point of comparison!).

Washers may be worth a try?

Ian.

Thanks Ian, great tip, the racks have never been used on this car so the paint on the car roof sockets is in perfect condition, ill search out some rubber or silicon washers..

Cheers

I've made washers at home successfully.

Use a hole saw to cut rubber sheet (mat) placed on a piece pf pine timber.

A 30 mm hole saw would be perfect. :)

Hi TJ.

In 1975, my first car was a '63 wagon. Two tone green, the front half was a dull colour green and the back was a similar colour, but brighter. What a limo.

Anyhow, the 404 is a good choice of model to own.

If you would like a digital copy of the factory workshop manual and spare parts manual, drop me a private message
with your details. No charge.

Cheers,

Dano
