Sorry if this is an easy one guys but I dont know my Reanults very well.

I saw it parked down the road from my work the other day.
Walking up behind it I thought it was a VW Beetle (orginal), sorry  . Until I noticed that it had these really nice looking louvers on the boot. I presume it's rear engined?
When I got beside it I noticed it was 4 door. Then the owner came out and got into it and I notice the doors hinged backward.
All in all a very nice wee car.

Anyone ID this for me?

Sounds like a Renault 750 (or 4CV in Europe). Did it look like this?

Probably a 4CV.

Ren
cheers!

maybe it was a 750?
Both a 4cv and a 750 (or 760 if you refer to an early model) are the same.

Just that it was called Renault 750/760 in AUS, UK and US makets.

didn't they actually start off life as an 850 but had to reduce engine size for a catagory ?

anyway there are 2 of these parkes around the corner from here :D

lighting controls and such are also very much like a 203 pug

Close but not quite. It was a 760 until 1951, then down to 750 (with the same power) to get it into the 750cc class. The 850cc version as used in the Dauphine.

How did they get away with the "CV" label ??? Isn't that a Citroen badging copywrite ?

No, CV is the shorthand for chevaux (or cheval) vapeur, or horse power.

Hence the 2CV is 2 fiscal horsepower, 4CV is 4 fiscal horsepower.

The fiscal horsepower rating determining how much the registration charge for the vehicle is. A 2cv is cheaper rego than a 16cv car.

Yeah the Citroen light 15 is considered 15 fiscal hp in the UK (hence th name), but considered 11CV in France. I think 504s and other 2 litre cars are also considered to be 11CV. 404s I think are 9CV and I think 203s are 7CV. Somebody should be able to correct me on this.

Then you get weird versions like the 403-7 (403 with 7CV 203 motor) and Simca Ariane (Vedette with 1.3 litre Aronde motor)among others to get into lower tax categories......

Yeah that's definitely it from the rear, but the front was quite different.
Same kinda overall structure, but a tall vertical mesh type grill in the center, rather than horizontal chrome bars. Also had the Renault badge towards the top of it.

All in all a very nice wee car.

They go any good? What sort of value? 750cc motor is it?

1) Yes, if your bag is low powered rear engined swing axle fun.

2) Probably anything from free for a rusty one up to say about AU$6K for a pristine example.

3) 750cc three bearing 30 odd horsepower. But the sky is the limit up to 1565cc 16TS power, with appropriate mods. Also in SA there used to be a 16TS supercharged mid engined hillclimb car.

With a grille in the front, it may have had a transplant and a radiator put up the front, as cooling is at a premium with the rad in the standard position. (ahead of the motor) OK with 20 Hp, bit of a problem with over 100.
Mine is in the standard position with a good 16TS, and it works OK, but I would like to use the fans less.
