My 404C resto begins!

I made a visit to Coachwerks on Friday:

for detailed photos of the work done in the past two weeks, go here: Update 2

Nice P1800 (?) in the background. Your pics are great and the progress is fantastic. You must be really pleased to see it coming along so well after such a long wait.

Great photos Mike. They have done a lot in a short time. Making patches is so time consuming.

Friday afternoon I visited*Coachwerks.

The new front crossmember is on, some significant repairs were needed on the driver's side inner fender and that fender is now tacked in place, with fine-tuning and possible future adjustments to follow. Next week I have to take the rubber seals down for panel alignment purposes, as well as the grille.

The old front crossmember didn't look all that bad but when it was off, the bodyman in the photo above showed it to me and shook it, and it sounded just like a Maraca:)

They will be painting the front brake drum backing plates, the Hydrovac vacuum tank and the air inlet grille. I will repaint the brake drums myself in manifold paint. I had them blasted at Blast-it in Victoria today and I even did the vacuum tank blasting myself!

Hi Mike,

I'm possibly putting the cart before the horse, but have you any idea what colour you will be repainting it?

Cheers,

Dan

Paint will be Bleu Fonce 1057 (with this iPad I can't get the accent aigu on the e), which is a medium to dark blue. It's far better than the refrigerator white the car was originally. I even have the assent of the dealer employees who sold the car when it was new to change the colour!

March 24th, left front guard is welded on; other side will be done next week, and then some final welding and metal trimming will be done before paint preparation begins.

If anyone has a new or used (in good condition) strut nut like the one in the middle of this photo, I would like to buy it.

It's from 1964-66 models only. The nut on the left is from a 1963 model sedan - the middle nut is from my 1966 Coupé - and the nut on the right is from all 404s from 1967 onwards.

Mike,

It could be a little on the expensive side, but have you thought about getting one turned up at an engineering shop. If they used a mild steal round section of similar size, it would not be too difficult to hollow out and cut a thread...

Cheers,

Dan

I had thought of that Dan. Meanwhile, yesterday the guy who was putting the new Peugeot OE strut inserts together managed to turn down a 1963 style nut on a lathe to fit the 1966 strut. In the photo below, the strut on the left has the modified 1963 nut on it, which has closed it off well enough and the strut insert does not move. The one on the right is the original 1966 type. But if a "proper" 1966 version becomes available, I would rather use that.

March 31st: major welding is all done. Next week it will be a full coating in epoxy primer, then a few weeks of blocking and priming, followed by a topcoat in Dark Blue 1057. Exciting times! Oh yeah that's me in photo 1, a bit older than the car.

Mike, the car is coming along really well. I'll bet you can't wait till it's finished and you take it for a test drive.

Looking great Mike.

Despite the flu today I made a short visit to the 404C. The shell has all been primed in epoxy and the interior bits have been painted in Dark Blue 1057 (Bleu Foncé 1057), mixed based upon a colour chip I have from 1966 sales material, with actual paint on it. Here is a shot of the engine compartment (the car was under plastic wrap when I stopped by the shop).

For comparison, in similar lighting conditions, here is the Coupé of my friend Tim Bowles of Victoria BC, and he told me that when his car was repainted 25 years ago, it was a tone or half tone too light. Still lovely.

Just beautiful Mike, and it's good to see what it will look like when completed. What's happening with the mechanical components?

Magnifique!! It may have been on hold for many years, but it is now all coming together.

Not to depreciate the wonderful rust repairs and paint.

It seems to me that rear battery mount bracket is bent. I recall that they(on sedan anyway) were vertical.

If I'm in fact correct , now is the time to fix it up , during paint, rather than afterwards.

Please feel free to tell me to " faire chier" if I'm wrong.:)

Congratulations on the work so far.
