Melbourne Mechanic

Hi guys,

I've got a really great 504 sedan which I've had for the past 8 years. Since moving to Melbourne I've been taking it to Universe Motors in Richmond, and while I'm happy with the work they do, I'm not entirely happy with the prices.

When I lived in Canberra I went to a great suburban mechanic who I was really happy with. I now need to get my rear brake pads and windscreen wipers fixed and I'm really reluctant to go back to Universe.

Any 504 experts out there...?

i have had the same experince $1500 to change an alternater on a 405
i recently used a guy called salman who was excellent. he is mobile and really honest and straight forward. his no. is 0432 603 766.
good luck

My last 406 (RIP) I was taking to Tony at Spencer St, he was quite good and did a number of services on that car (til it was written off) he went through with me all the prices, what was wrong with the car and all services he performed, I never once had to go back to him to get something re-looked at and his prices were quite good.

I've since moved to Essendon, and I'm looking at a 306 XSi tonight, so I may be asking if there is a good mechanic in this area.

North area

Sam is still at Spencer street, dropped by yesterday, they are expanding the workshop and should be organised soon, his mate is Ahmed-both quality workers.
I am available on weekends.

scarlette who was this suburban mechanic in Canberra, Im yet to find a mechanic here in this shit hole.

Unfortunately I cannot say I disagree with you about the shit hole... Anyway, I recently had my Xsara serviced at Scullin Service Centre. Good and thorough, but labour was pricey if compared to Melbourne.

Cheers,
Paul

mechfaker

we all know there is a level of trust we put in a mechanic.
i am a bloke so i know what is under the hood in my car.
my Mum however hasn't got a clue which can become amusing.
women often get skinned for work the car doesn't even need and the work may or may not be done even though the client pays the bill.
Rorts are common and it is a shame in the Euro car scene when owners are presumed to be a sitting-duck or rich because they own a classy European car.
I once took a used Renault car in to be tested and was told it needs a new engine because it blows smoke.
hence I changed the oil and it never blew smoke again.

Where do i start with the boys @ Universe Motors. Paul Stratman is a typical sales man (full of !@#) and for the others. They can all go back to school.

Universe Motors

:) We are new to Victoria and have a 2008 307 HDI. and a 308. Going by referral we ended up taking the 307 to Universe Motors in Swan Street, Richmond...... We are glad we did! They addressed some key issues we have had with the vehicle that nobody in NSW, dealer or otherwise could, and what's more they did it with efficiency, pleasant manner and with good comparitive cost. It is refreshing to find a repair workshop that is both knowledgeable and helpful.............I will be referring others to them! Also being on Swan Street I was able to leave the car and get the tram to the city... so convenient! Thanks to Paul Stratmann and his staff.

I can do north/westerm melb

Have no computer but can do all mech work, got timing tools for Peug/Cit.Was first bloke in Au to do diesel V6 timing [2006 at ULR] Ican do south and north so guys with relatively small jobs on this side are welcome.Get new bits from Ken at Caravelle,he is great.Good second hands from Hayden, probably best source for older models, they open 10 ish and usually work late not your usual 8.30-5,leave msg or call in aternoon. Both post stuff out for next day.
You can get me 0432 603 766

I had Paul at Autoparis replace the roof on kermit when it was slashed, top job done no probs. He also replaced the roof on my dads can as well.

Before you all jump up and down and point fingers yes I do work there as well, but all the above work was done BEFORE I moved to Melbourne while I was still at a dealer. BEFORE I was offered a job.

When I first got my 206gti I tool it to Alpine Affaire. They did a full clutch kit for me, and a service at another time. I've got no doubt they know their stuff, but a couple of things ruined the experience for me. Things like taking off the beesting antenna and leaving it on the front seat, not resetting the service indicator and leaving it unlocked out on the street.

Recently we to my local (Rowville Brake and Clutch) to get a fluid leak checked. He found it in 30 seconds. Had no issues sourcing the part, and fixed it in 90mins cheaper than he quoted. Also took the time to show me the faulty part and explain the issue. Great to have a mechanic who doesn't thrown their arms in the air when they see a pug.

Spencer St are great stuff! No they aren't Melbourne Peugeot/ City Peugeot etc. Far better.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Paris Motors at 42 Appleton St Richmond 94270111. Citroen specialists but they know alot about Pugs too. I've used them for a couple of problems and they've been very good-knowledgeable, friendly and very good prices too. I too have found Universe Motors a bit on the expensive side.

Has anyone comments, corrections or deletions for the list of Melbourne (and Victorian) Mechanics above. Please post or PM them to me. Thanks

A couple of comments on some places I rang to get my stuffed GTi6 clutch cable replaced-

Elliott Beniada 0412 391 205 http://www.frenchgarage.com.au/ is now also a mobile mechanic
Website is dead it seems but I rang anyway. Sounded like a nice enough guy and was eager to help, but when I said I needed the clutch cable replaced and described the symptoms he tried to convince me that he'd need to check the internals of and potentially replace the entire clutch. I get that nobody likes being told how to do their job but c'mon, this is a well known issue in the 306 and a full overhaul is a bit extreme.

My mechanic of choice. They're not local to me anymore but I'm still gonna keep going there as Joe & Grant are great to deal with. :)
