Well today is a day of slight suffering. Mild sunburn, tight forearms and a sore left calf. But yesterday was ohh so rewarding.

I took another trip out to Mallala Motor Sport Park to put the Citroen Xsara through its paces. Well the word "pace" is a bit of an exaggeration.

Last time i was on the track there was a good selection of cars around my times with a 205 Gti, 205 Mi16, Gti180 etc...
This time i found : V8 SuperTourer, 2 Porsche GT2's, EVO 8,4,4,3, countless EA Saloon series cars, a HQPrem, Historics, Mini, Escort RS2000 and a Corolla

So all in all i was looking in the mirror quite a lot - and getting off the race line quite often - all of which is reflected in my lap times. I have lap times for all five sessions and for the first 2 races i reviewed via handycam who overtook me and whom I overtook.

1.1 # 1:35.04 # - Porsche GT2, - EA Saloon
1.2 # 1:32.04 # - EA Saloon
1.3 # 1:30.89 # + EA Saloon
1.4 # 1:29.96 # - EA Saloon
1.5 # 1:31.14 # - EVO4

2.1 # 1:33.01 # + Historic, + Corolla
2.2 # 1:31.81
2.3 # 1:30.08
2.4 # 1:33.01 # - EVO?, - Mini, - Porsche GT2
2.5 # 1:36.00 # - EA Saloon, + Corolla, - V8 Supercar, - EVO4
2.6 # 1:29.97
2.7 # 1:36.03 # - Porsche GT2, - EA Saloon, + EA Saloon, - EA Saloon, + EVO3, - EVO4
2.8 # 1:34.94 # - EA Saloon, - EA Saloon, + Mini

3.1 # 1:30.99
3.2 # 1:30.92
3.3 # 1:34.04
3.4 # 1:33.00
3.5 # 1:29.96
3.6 # 1:31.93

In session 4 i came across an arch-nemesis... a fckn pain in the arse HQPrem  (or whatever those race cars are)[Edit: HQ Holden Championship car]. He had the same ooomph as me but braked waaay too early for me. The "rules" say you aren't supposed to overtake into corners and coupled with the fact the bastard would block the inside line left me fuming... I was clearly faster.

4.1 # 1:34.92
4.2 # 1:38.06
4.3 # 1:33.87
4.4 # 1:37.15

session 5 and i got stuick behind the HQPrem again. On the 2nd lap i thought i'd push the issue a little. He moved across to mid track down the main sweeper so i couldnt go underneath, nor could i go around the outside in all the dirty marbley shit. So the moment he braked i had moved to the very inside and made use of the extra 80 (i dont know if they're hundred metres those 3,2,1 signs) before braking hard and holding the inside line into the hairpin (turn5). The problem was he was still there so i had to hold it inside and drive out of the corner with him right next to me - gently easing on the power as i had been suffering some nasty understeer. Now i was left on the outside of turn6, but as long as i had postion going into the S's i'd have him. I lost some metres to him having to drive around the outside and at the approach to turn 7 - the start of the S's - i knew that i'd have to race side-by-side all the way to the start finish straight. So giving him plenty of room i raced toward the line and cut across in front to take up position for turn1 and i was away. In the subsequent 3 laps i put a massive 15.98 seconds on him. :D

5.1 # 1:34.08
5.2 # 1:34.89
5.3 # 1:31.02
5.4 # 1:31.14
5.5 # 1:33.82
5.6 # 1:30.08
5.7 # 1:32.93

I am watching SBS at the moment with Formula3 cars going around Mallala - holy bat crap they're quick. But a memory i am going to hold for some time is the feeling, the sound, the whoosh of a V8 Supercar over taking me in my bog stock frog.

Nice work Q.

You must have had a ball - I'd love to see that tape.

However You have hightlighted one reason that I'm not too keen to take my car out onto an open track day. You have some mindless racers who arent really afraid to rub panels etc as it's their race car. They dont have to drive it home!

The speed difference between your car and the V8's must have been astounding.

You should have let me know and I would have come up for a look.

i want to start racing one of my 205gti's

what club are you a member of?

do you need a cams licence, what are the costs etc?

Currently I am not affiliated with any club nor do I hold a CAMS license. This was simply an 'Open Practice Day', where any roadworthy or logbooked car can hit the track and practice.

If you want to 'race' ie. on a grid with other cars then yes, you most definitely need a CAMS license. Cost is dependent on the series or type of events you're going to enter and how much development you are going to pursue.

Do you want to race for fun, trophies or prizemoney? Are you interested in Circuit, Sprints, Motokhana, Rallycross?

i personally like the idea of Improved Production

XZARAVTS,
Good to see you had a grand day out. Your "arch nemesis" the HQ punter.
If he was giving you so much grief why didn't you find a nice quiet spot "on the island"? After all it wasn't a race just time trials. :nownow:
I should imagine "arch" was a serious racer and was trying to get further on the pace. Apart from using his skills to keep it safe I doubt whether he cared less about you and that you were either good close racing practice or a bloody nuisance! Oh, the reason you put 16 seconds on him? He was getting out of your way!! :clown:
By all means keep up the driving and avoid wearing anything but tyres. :wink2:
