Old Peugeot pattern was first gear was away from the driver and down. 4th was TO the driver and UP. A bit like a 2CV pattern but vertical.
The most logical actual pattern is a BVH DS. 1st and reverse in the distant plane, then through to the driver to engage second and then 3rd and 4 th in line to the right. Simples !
