I just bought a brand new condition 306GTI-6! My first Peugeot

Hey all, I just purchased a Peugeot 306GTI-6 in brand new condition with only 53,400km on the clock. I’ll post photos of it later when I take some nice ones.

The car has an aftermarket muffler fitted however and an K&N pod filter. It doesn’t sound too good and am looking at going back to a standard muffler if possible.

Anyone else reading this own a GTI-6? What do you think of it?

Get rid of the pod filter too if it is not set up to suck fresh air from outside the car. You should be able to find the missing parts at wreckers or here. And if you really want a K&N filter you can get one that fits the OEM intake.

Not enough info. Need pics. Welcome to our little club.
Mine is going for a slightly twisty drive this week. Grinning already.
It’s very dirty at the moment so it needs a clean before I post proper pics! It’s also at my grandparent’s garage for the next week or so whilst I get together space in mine!

How do you like your car? I imagine you love it right?

Thanks for that! I certainly plan to. Also, do you know much about the differences between phases? The car was complied in June 1999 which means it should be a phase 3, but it still has the phase 2 headlights and black strips on the side. Everything else is phase 3 though.

Actually, here’s some pics from the previous seller

AFAIK, the latest changes appeared in August 1999, not June. As to whether that was August arrival in Australia (ie. Australian compliance) or August factory build I'm not sure.

I think it was arrival in Australia from August, as Redbook lists a model change in August 1999 as well - with a piccy of colour-coded side moulds.

Demannu-facturing!
In France, the summer holidays are taken in August. This is when the factories re-tool, so the new model year begins when the workers return in late August. The same applied for the UK factories.

'Phase 3' 306s started production in August 1999.

Well you are a lucky so-and-so. Personally, I think that's one of the best colours for the GTi6 and the interior looks very good. Certainly a rarity.

I'm fairly certain no GTi6's ever made it to full Phase 3, only the XSi and Rallye (tarted up XT)

Things you should probably do - ignore me if you already know -
Timing belt, low kays doesn't mean it won't need one. Every 4 years is a must.
Lower control arms usually need replacing.
Front brake lines - cheap and good upgrade if you go braided.
Fresh fuel filter, Oils, brake fluids etc.
And get the rear beam checked - key to the famous handling.
And the absolute best tyres you can afford. Probably limited to Michelin Pilot sport 3 or Conti UltraContact 5 or 6
There's numerous other little idiosyncrasies that I'm sure you'll encounter - ask here, someone always knows.

Oh, also, clutch cable - a new one does wonders and so do new linkages for the gearbox/shifter - all in due time.

Have fun, they are great cars

Thanks for the input and your knowledge! Yes, the cam belt is on the priority list and will be done next week. Driving to the mechanic will be my first drive!

I will most likely purchase Bridgestone RE003’s. They’re a fantastic tyre. Here’s some photos of the interior and engine too.

On that little gem, I’d say Michelin PS4 over the RE003. While a great tyre in their own right (although pretty sketchy in the wet), the Pug will be happier with a more road oriented tyres.

And wow, what a find! That’s worth not driving too much and keeping it like that as long as you can...

Sadly PS4’s don’t come in those tyre sizes. Sadly the only realistic options are the PS3’s or RE003’s. My grandad has ran both on his Golf GTI so I have a bit of experience with both tyres, and I’m actually really satisfied with the 003’s performance. They’re a very reactive tyre too, which I think would suit a 306 GTI nicely.
