Just took sum photos of my engine bay.
Last week i made this Cold Air type box thing for my Pug and i need some feedback.

Is it crap?
Is it good?
Any ways i can improve it?

Does anyone have any pics of the Esscargo system?

Thanks

Oh also what the hell does this pipe do?
Its connectied to what looks like the variable lenghth inlet runners....it suks in air but i think it need to reroute it so it is sucking filtered air not the dirty stuff it is ATM

Hey,

Looks like a tidy install there! head_ban

The pipe you are talking about looks like (Don't quote me on it by any means) the inlet for oil vapours to be redirected back through the engine and out the exhaust. It might not be a wise thing to redirect/remove it.

the inlet for oil vapours to be redirected back through the engine and out the exhaust
Thats what i thought at first that it was an oil breather line for the rocker cover but im not to sure???? frown

For the intake, not a bad effort. Most people put it down where the original air box is, which is almost under the battery, but more closer to the radiator. id remove the passenger side wheels, the inner guards, and spot the horn, on the N3's the air horn is behind the driving light relocate the horn, (which is a horn, pump and eclectrical conections!!!) use a small electronic unit from any cheap jap wreck, and put the pod here, its away from all other hot things and if you remove some bumper trim will get plenty of cool air. Run the duct down and upto the throttle in take and cover the duct in some sort of reflective shielding, hard backed aluminium foil is good and cheap, get it at any hard ware, or rip it from your exhaust lining...lol. replace what you can of inner guard and refit wheel, done.
I went a little further and my pod sit s low its visible from the front of the car.. just in the path of air below the front bumper line. Neat, and no one notices.
WRC, most other pug owners cant put it were you did, as the ABS system controls sits there where your actual pod is.

For the pipe-On the s16's its a oil/gas head breather pipe. d look at the original set up and see where it plumbed in, but im sure its on the airflow path into the intake. there should be valve just before it so when the pressure/vacumm is high it shuts, hence no overspill oil or gasses enter, but then the valve opens at low revs/vacum, where the spill over gases and oils cando less damage. - cheers chris

WRCPUG,

very nice heat shield and install.
That rubber pipe how ridgit is it? Under extreme driving conditions you may end up with the pipe collapsing (high heat and maximum vacum from the throttle body). Nearly all of the OEM items like that have cross-ribbing to prevent this from happening.
Just something to watch out for. :)

I will take the pics of my Esscargo system tomorrow and post it here. (memory permitting wink )

looks like the tubing used is ribbed all the way along it's length with wire
i can't see it collapsing under high revs

it's the same tubing i used for cold air induction on the 604

only difference is i plumbed the tube straight into the air cleaner and placed a bell mouth at the front end to gather as much cool air as possible

same idea though in placing it near enough to behind the headlight

in the 604 the opening is before the radiator so i didn't need a heat shield

Is the smaller pipe possibly the one that goes to the idle control stepper motor? This usually bridges the throttle body. Stu.

That piping will be fine, looks the same as what i've got....it's commonly used for ducting.

Alex i'll speak to you about exhausts/filters next tiem I see you, coming to the azm cruise this sunday?

Just a thought....is it possible to fit a BMC Carbon Dynamic Airbox in place of the OE airbox??

The Carbon Airbox (incl filter) is there really to shield it from heat soaking from the engine...well if I manage to afford one and to fit one.

Cheers
Billy

if you can squeeze it in there (look my pic above) the BMC does seem to have favourable results on a Clio Sport.

I guess you could mount it vertically (if the manufacturer recommends that type of install) and have a ram tube of some sort feeding it.

Thanks for the input guys
Chris-yes i had thought about mounting it under the bumper just near the fog light but i was too lazy to go cutting guards and stuff. I may give it a go but im pretty crap at working on cars and end up getting fed up after about 5 mins.lol

Oh yeah and i realise that the ABS unit is there on other GTi6 how bout ur S16 does it have ABS?

Tekkie- The piping i bought from sum industrial piping place...they said alot of drag cars come in and get piping from there.
The piping is rated at 80 degrees i think..its ribbed and i had the same concerns as you that it would bend but it wont...its very firm and cannot deform because it has metal ribbing.
PS-Thanks for the pics mate :)

Andreas- Ahhhhhh is there a cruise on this unday :( God dammit i gotta work :( Oh did u see Paulosportz and stuff the other day? The exclusive guys cause they said they saw your XSi

The induction sound now just screams it sounds so good at high rpm...i keep bouncing of the limiter cause once the engine hits 5000rpm it just races to redline.

Yeah, the S16 has the ABS in the same position, so to use a pod filter it must be placed in the bottom of the left guard, like Chris explained. This is where I have mine too.

Alex, yeah i saw SIKCAR last night in Flemington.

I think we need to do a test drive to compare cars, the XSi feels sluggish after 5000rpm.

can i show you all how lucky you are they you don't have a xt?? :D
